Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo News 2022

  • Fantastic news about the proposed Solar development
  • Even though I'm gutted I never got to see the Giant pandas I'm glad they're going and their enclosure will be redeveloped, how big is their enclosure and what would be suitable replacement in there?
  • Moving the zebra sounds like a good idea to be in the same area as giraffes.

When I visited back in December I was quite happy with the enclosure size and actually expected it to be smaller than what it was. The enclosure from what I can remember was split into 2 halves fir the male and female. I think that this could make a pretty good enclosure for either snow leopards or amur leopards. There is plenty of hight in the indoor areas and the outdoors could be easily modified I think. But with both these species being at the Highland wildlife park I'm unsure if they would get these species at edinburgh

Edinburgh Zoo, home of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), one of Europe’s leading centres of conservation, education and research, has launched a new virtual tour experience.

The interactive video allows users to tour, view and meet some of the animals and zookeepers at the 82-acre attraction, without having to be on site:

A few updates from tonight's AGM:

  • The Giant Panda's are scheduled to leave in October/November 2023. It is not expected that they will stay beyond this time, and they will not be replaced by a new pair of Giant Panda's. Their current enclosure will be re-purposed for a different species. Which species has not yet been decided.
With this in mind, I may schedule one more visit to Edinburgh Zoo before the pandas go. I've been meaning to plan another visit since Wee Beasties re-opened, and I was throwing around the idea of spending a full weekend in Scotland to visit Edinburgh, Five Sisters and Deep Sea World. My original intention was to do it this October, but I nay hold back until next May or June.

Apparently they had 3 male buff cheeked gibbons at the start of the year and only 2 at the end but there doesn’t seem to be a death or departure.

I suspect a typo as I'm sure there were three Gibbons when we visited in April.

Car parking charges are returning from Thursday 1 September for everyone apart from RZSS members who can continue to park for free as part of their membership benefits.

All car park users will need to take a ticket from the barriers on arrival and have this validated to exit the car park without paying full price (£10) at the machine.

Zoo visitors can get their discounted price of £3 by validating their ticket and paying for parking at admissions when they arrive:

Had a lovely visit today, only a couple of points to note:

  • Animal Antics shows have now resumed, currently on twice daily
  • The Pelicans have laid at least 2 eggs and are sitting on the nest. I think this is the first time they have laid eggs since arriving several years ago. This means they are remaining in the Duck Pond enclosure, where they were moved due to Avian Flu, for the time being.
