Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo news 2024

This sounds like an interesting design!

The other options were Meerkat and Cassowary. I voted Pygmy Hippo as it's an iconic species for the zoo and the first hippo species I saw was pygmy hippo at Edinburgh Zoo circa 1994. The design can be seen on the zoo's social media.

Visited today:

• African Aviary is very empty at the moment, with only the crowned crane and dik-dik left.

• The female red panda was extremely active in the former skunk area of the enclosure and appeared to not have access to the main area.

• The pelican walkthrough is still empty

• One year on, the saki walkthrough is still closed and no construction at all has been made on it. The house is still open because there are still some female red-bellied lemurs in the cage and overhead tunnel leading into the house.

• There are some new furnishings in the indoor area for the lemurs

• The former cassowary viewing hut has been closed off, and, from what I could see from the enclosure, has been made into an indoor section.

• The old Barbary rock/hyrax enclosure now has waterfall on it to add to the water feature

• The sun bear paw interactive section of a sign has been removed, probably getting a bit musty since it’s been there since 2010 and had been touched probably thousands of times.

• The living links monkeys had some enrichment in the form of milk bottles with food inside, which was funny to watch the capuchins try to get the food out and a couple dropped them from high up on their climbing platform.

• Saw all four koalas in their enclosure, whilst the male enclosures are still empty with no change happened since I last visited.

• There are even more goats in the old deer enclosure next to the marsupial walkthrough, which I believe is now the third enclosure holding the domestic and not endangered species.

• Saw one of the anteater standing up at the

Thanks for the update, was there much change at the panda enclosure or are the gates just shut? I wonder what will happen to the wooden panda statue etc.

When I last visited (Before the Pandas Left) I really enjoyed the Panda Area, I hope it isn’t just removed and rather repurposed.

I agree, in general it’s an excellent enclosure/area. Be interesting to see what they keep and what they change, we still don’t know yet what animal will be going there.

Don't think this had been said yet, on my visit on Saturday, I saw that the agouti had been moved out of the pudu exhibit and saw them later on at the offshow enclosure next to wee beasties. Does anyone know why they've done this? I have no clue.

They are still listed on zoo's website, they have 0.2. Was the signage removed at the Pudu enclosure? Is it possible that a new animal(s) have arrived to join the existing 0.2?

Hopefully they are being house there on a temporary basis before moving to a different enclosure, as opposed to being housed there in preparation for leaving the collection.

Received the RZSS newsletter today the email update , not the magazine that's not out yet. Still no indication as to what is going to replace the Pandas, I dont understand why they are so secretive about it all, I suspect they are going to unveil it at the members meeting which is in May perhaps.

I'd of thought theyd update the public/members too as to when the keepers are coming back from China (I presume they have by now), I've found some updates about how Yang Guang & Tian Tian (via Chinese social media) are getting on but nothing really from the Zoo itself which is a shame, given the fact that some zoos that have previously had pandas do still provide updates as to how they are getting on.

I guess they want to move on now the pandas have left the collection (they have stopped selling panda merchandise too), but people would still be interested to know how they are getting on and it would provide engagement and exposure for the zoo.

Its also equally disappointing that the penguin parade is still 'postponed' given the fact that other zoos are doing theirs (in the US), this year would mark 5 years since the last penguin parade took place.
