Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo news 2024

Long time lurker, first time poster. I've been a RZSS member for about 7 years now and found this site whilst looking for information on a couple European Zoos collections before visiting. Have to say this forum has been really helpful enhancing my visits to Edinburgh especially with news about the drills lately who are becoming firm favourites!

The koala cam seems to have been upgraded and it has night vision. There has been a lot of activity in there this evening!
That’s really good, since before at night it was just pitch black.

Also, Welcome!

Welcome @ArmadilloArms! It’s very good the zoo has now upgraded the koala enclosure.

Well, I visited today. Here’s some news:

- Both of the tigers in each enclosure were stereotyping for the whole time I saw them, sadly.

- There is some logs in the old male koala enclosures, hopefully there will be some developments soon.

- There is plenty of construction taking place, with both the gelada enclosure facelift and the new zebra enclosure taking shape.

- The new L’hoest’s monkey area looks nearly done, though it is still empty and the monkeys are still down in the old drill enclosure.

- The crowned lemurs are being temporarily held in one of the panda indoor sections whilst their normal enclosure is being developed, although I did not see any since the keeper were in enclosure and also the red panda is still in the outdoor section.

- All the drills are in the enclosure together.

Yeah, I also can't stand that when I'm seeing a particular animal (wolves, tigers, gorillas) and bystanders continue to mimic the animals as they mind their own business.

So have the Zebras left or are they still in the zoo somewhere?

I think they’re still in the African plains enclosure although I didn’t go to it today.

Whats the new L'hoest enclosure like I hope its a good space for them?

A few updates from my visit today:

  • The old male Banteng passed away from Cancer. His son, Struan, remains and the current plan is to bring in some females as companions for him. He's a castrated male so there will be no calves unfortunately.
  • Asiatic Lion, Kushanu, is expected to leave for a collection in Europe at some point this year, his father Jay will remain in Edinburgh with new females joining him.
  • There seem to be no surplus male Sun Bear's in the UK or Europe so the zoo is looking at potentially bringing a male in from the Free The Bears sanctuary in Cambodia, where they got the original two males from.
  • There are also no surplus Douroucouli available to join the single male, Baroo.
  • I have added photo's to the gallery showing the new waterfall feature in the centre of the zoo, the new viewing area's for the Gelada's and the renovated ex Egyptian Vulture enclosure.

Thanks for the update , don’t suppose you managed to get near the panda enclosure? Would be interesting to see if the gate and/or the panda statue is to be kept. But I do suspect perhaps not.

The gate and Panda statue are both still in place. There was no development around that area at all.

Oh that’s actually good , but also a little surprising to hear. I do hope they at least keep the gate going forward as it would be a shame to scrap it.

Presumably then all the panda farewell boards & the painted giraffe is still there then?

I never understood why that painted giraffe appeared there again last year after disappearing for a bit, as in 2022 i remember it was in a competition (which I entered as well) and the winner would receive it & the rest of the giraffes were auctioned off in October 2022 I believe.

Perhaps whoever won it didn’t have room for it lol.

Any changes on the old panda enclosure
Well, I actually did today. I was biking up Corstorphine Hill with some of my friends today and I saw the old panda enclosure from the outside of the zoo. There were some probably temporary refurbishments for what looked to be some sort of goat in the enclosure, which looked like markhor but I couldn’t be sure. I think they’ll probably be from HWP temporarily and leave, but I don’t know. Hopefully something more interesting will be permanently put in the enclosure later.

In this thread: someone blithely saying that markhor - a species which UK zoo enthusiasts must either travel to the continent to see, or get all the way up to HWP - is an uninteresting species :D:eek:

I like markhors and I remember seeing some on the Mappin Terraces at London Zoo many years ago
