Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo news 2024

Visited today for a half day visit. The guide map has been updated.

Couple of discussion points from the map include:

- japanese macaque on the map (didn't see them today, no evidence that they have been on show yet)

- Crowned Lemurs marked in the indoor part of the old pandas. (Saw them last week but not this week)

- nothing marked in the old monkey walkthrough near the flamingoes. (Saw red ruffed lemurs there recently but didn't stop by today as it was a quick visit)

- nothing marked at the "new panda" enclosure. But 1 M, 3 F & 1 juvenile Markhor are in there and utilising the climbing frames. They have no access to the inside but the sides of the frames have been barricaded to create sheds/shelters. Personal note: still praying for a himalayan set of animals in there like Berlin's Tierpark

- L'hoests marked in the old vulture enclosure. Didn't spot them today, whilst it looks great with the climbing structures and planting in there, I feel that there is little chance to actually get good viewing in that enclosure. I'm 5ft and visibility was poor for me due to the planting put in place. I can see this being a viewing problem for kids and those with mobility issues or shorter posture.

Couple of personal notes:
- 5th birthday banner in the Drill enclosure and a lot of birthday themed enrichment. Party bags and piñatas etc. The females seem to have paired up into 2 groups consisting of 1 older female: 1 younger female.

- Male Pygmy hippo very active around the enclosure whenever we passed.

- couple of bagot goats in the holding pen near the wallaby walkthrough.

- Male sloth very active, popped over to see if it was his turn in the basket he and Fe share ownership of. She said it was not for sharing so he went back towards his box above the armadillo.

- baboon viewing areas are still not open but are looking great, I've always wanted to get closer along that path!

- the king penguin that was being held in quarantine along the gentoo egg viewing building around late jan/early feb isn't in there anymore. 5 spotted in the enclosure. Can't remember if there was 5 or 6 total so unsure if that's one that's potentially passed recently or has been reintroduced to the colony.

- pelicans have a bit of a privacy screen with viewing holes on the sandy corner of their enclosure (near the gift shop)

- 100% viewing success in the magic forest.

- Saw the most I've ever seen of the cuscus (about 25% of their body at once;) )

I agree I’m really glad to hear the snow monkeys are now at EZ too, especially Honshu.

So to confirm the Turkmenian markhor are now in the old panda enclosure for the time being? I thought the koalas were going to be moved there?

Koalas are still planned to go up there for their enclosure refurb and I presume they still will with the markhor there as they are not using the indoor areas

The red ruffed lemurs you are talking about are actually the female red bellied lemurs, although there were originally red ruffed lemurs in the enclosure in the mid 2000s.

A new zoo map has been uploaded to the website, it is a completely different style from the maps of the last few years:

https://www.edinburghzoo.org.uk/media/10223/edinburgh-zoo-map_march2024.pdf
I miss the old style, which is immediately recognisable as being Edinburgh, but this map is objectively a lot better, with some of the illustrations looking wonderful. It does seem a lot more convoluted (could be imagining it but it looks as though some smaller pathways that weren’t shown before are now shown), but other than that is wonderful, and although I am sure this is unintentional the slanted angle seems to represent how Edinburgh itself is situated on a hill. It will be interesting to see if the HWP map gets an update as well in the same style…

It’s a shame to see it so different from the old map & with it being the first one where there’s no Pandas but time moves on.

I agree with the above however, it is objectively a lot better than the previous maps, in the sense that it shows the hill a lot more accurately and is clearer for noting the smaller pathways and more in depth drawings of the features/enclosures themselves. On the previous maps a lot of them were gray squares I think.

Once again, they don’t feature the cuscus on the map

Apart from that, I think this new map looks great and really puts some new life into the zoo.

Whereabouts in the zoo is the cuscus?

Whereabouts is the old panda exhibit on the map?
Below the zebra and to the right of the antelope. Their original enclosure is where the red pandas, drill and Crowned lemurs are now.
I agree with others on here that the new map looks lovely, I like the art style and the little details make it much easier to visualise things. Are the Egyptian vultures gone now? Because I see the L'Hoest's monkeys have been moved into their old enclosure.

Does anyone know if there’s any capuchins left in the monkey house?
I believe they still are, still signed as well, though I feel they may move soon (maybe they could move to the red panda enclosure in the old giant panda enclosure once they go back to HWP) and I think the zoo tries to make you not go over that area. I think they will hopefully redevelop the monkey house into something nice soon.

Also, wouldn’t this map be outdated already since the building where the porcupines are on the map is being demolished?

Monkey house isn't on map at all, and it's all fenced off now so think there's nothing in there now.

Visited today. Couldn't see any signage at all along the outside viewing of the monkey House so didn't venture along. If I had checked here earlier I would have investigated for you JT.

SAW THE ENTIRE CUSCUS TWICE! They have added some new soil substrate in the enclosure.

The top part of tiger tracks is being resurfaced so was closed off today. Saw one asleep in the holding/indoor section enclosure by the old big cat walkway. (Dharma I think, although do like to see them both as its suddenly very obvious who is who when you've seen both of them to compare and contrast)

To correct my red ruffed/red bellied lemurs blunder from the weekend they are now back in with the ring tailed lemurs and not in the top part of flamingos/old monkey walk through anymore.

I'm not sure any further demolition is happening near the banteng/porcupine I think the old raised viewing area that has been out of bounds for a couple of years has been removed but by the looks of things the indoor area for the porcupine seems to be staying? For now at least!

The new physical guide map is also a larger format than previous ones. It opens out into 6 sections as opposed to 4 so the design looks much clearer. They have a couple of accessibility features on there too like highlighting the "steep route" and "very steep route" which is a nice addition.

4 Japanese Macaques spotted towards the end of the day. They are staying near the tunnel apparently and still quite shy as they settle in.
