Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo news 2024

I very much love the new map! Feels like something similar to the style of LA/SDZ, very modern! Bought a new one immediately for my wall (although yeah, rip cuscus)

Also saw all four Japanese macaques and saw a very brief burst of activity in which they were a joy to watch!

The old pelican walkthrough is being transformed into a new exhibit for the red river hogs!

It’ll be interesting to see what they do with current RRH enclosure.

Silly question but have the Pelicans left?

The Pelicans were moved from their original walkthrough enclosure some time ago due to bird flu restrictions as the walkthrough enclosure is not netted over. They have been, and are still, in the "Duck Pond" enclosure directly in front of the walkthrough enclosure, which is netted over.

A hyena has always been my pipe-dream for that exhibit. They're very underrepresented in UK zoos and I feel like I've seen so much less of them compared to the amount of big cats and canines I've seen. I think it would slot perfectly into that little corner

Obviously the pelican walkthrough was never going to reopen, but its still sad to see it going for good. The big drooping willow tree in the middle always made for a really beautiful view
 
Little visit today:

- Saw two of the macaques in their enclosure

- As already said, the monkey house is now devoid of monkeys, and they have not changed anything in the enclosures, although there are some more barriers on part of the path (the monkey house building doesn’t even appear on the new map.)

- Still didn’t see the crowned lemurs in their temporary enclosure. There appears to be some changes to their enclosure but I didn’t go over to it.

- No sign of any L’hoest’s monkeys in their enclosure sadly.

- Didn’t get to see the changes on the pelican enclosure for the RRHs but hopefully I will be able to soon.
 
I notice that they have started doing “sunrise safaris” whereby you can buy a special ticket and get a tour of the zoo before official opening. I’m glad they are doing more things like this, it was a bit like when I did the “bamboo brunch” over the summer they let us in an hour before the zoo officially opened to have our own private tour. Well worth the money I’d say.
 
Comments on the zoo FB post say Dublin but that's not the zoo saying that. Maybe there's a post from Dublin I've not seen?

When I visited Dublin in January, a staff member told me that they will be getting a male lion from Edinburgh this year. While they didn't specifically say which lion, I suspected it to be Kushanu. I've already reported this in the Dublin thread
 
It'll be interesting to see who Jay gets paired up with and if they are planning to breed.

Roberta and his daughter have both had cubs in the last year at Aalborg Zoo in Denmark. And with 2 sons off to different collections (in what looks like breeding groups) Jay could be well represented in the relatively small captive gene pool, especially as Asiatic Lions seem to be popular in zoos. I'd be excited if it were a breeding female, but I won't be shocked if we weren't getting cubs again for a while.

do you know why? I quite like koala territory i dont see the purpose in moving them permanently, especially (if im remembering correctly) with the horribly reflective glass of the panda indoors?

Can I ask do you mean the new or the old female indoor area although ether of them seem smaller than what the koalas have just now
