Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo news 2024

I think there are also plans (or at the very least, and idea) to refurbish the old Baboon Rock at some point, especially now they’ve got the waterfall up and running. Please correct me if I’m wrong though.

I think it was mentioned some time ago (AGM last year?) that it isn’t suitable for animals and won’t be developed as an enclosure.

Never heard of those- I thought they would just make it into a water feature. Where did you hear of this?

She was a rescue and has always done this unfortunately.
Not true. Babu was born at Usti Zoo (Czech Republic) and came to Edinburgh in 2019, so she was essentially captive bred and never came from the wild. You might have got confused with the original sun bears Somnang and Rotana (both of whom are sadly no longer with us, of course), and they were both rescues.

That’s interesting. It’s unfortunately very common with captive bears. Particularly those in inappropriate enclosures or those that have a lack of enrichment. I thought the enclosure was well furnished but on the smaller size. Did she do this before her enclosure mate/partner died?

On another note, is there a chance Edinburgh will use the old panda enclosure as their future sun bear set up (and put something else in the current sun bear habitat) or is it more likely that they’ll get a different species for there?

It has been mentioned that the panda enclosure will be home to a new bear species.

Ah yeah my apologies, I must’ve got confused there.

Better late than never - here is my notes fron this years AGM back in June, apologies for the delay I’ve been away/busy with work.

I can’t really match what Quincey has brilliantly summarised at the time but just from my own notetaking:

- Female cheetah arriving soon, with a male later to follow (now arrived) & await arrival of Pallas Cats.

- Red River Hogs to be housed in a new enclosure.

- New Wildlife Discovery centre completed at HWP , some of the funding secured from the Highlands and Islands enterprise & the national lottery.

- Upgrades to the Gannet Restaurant & Penguin Cafe, with Grasslands Resturant being next on the list.

- Qabid the rhino due to depart in November.

- RZSS membership stands at 46,000, with 2023 being a remarkably strong year financial wise (27.4m gross revenue).

- DF Objective not new exhibits in the short term, but they are aiming to maintain current exhibits as a “stepping stone” to longer term site planning.

- Potential development of the hill and it is in the long term plan to improve navigation around the zoo, according to DF it is an ‘asset’.

- Pandas are settled in China, however communication has been limited, while pandas are not in the long term plan of the Zoo, RZSS had aimed to house a rescue bear by this stage, but couldn’t due to “quarantine restrictions” , but RZSS aims to have a new species of bear by the end of 2025.

- Some of the social programs instigated by RZSS include 2670 Ukrainian / Afghan refugees got the opportunity to visit Edinburgh Zoo as well as RZSS new partnership with Cyrenians , a homeless charity.

I visited today (unfortunately it was quite wet.) There was a lot of changes I noticed:

- Saw Cleo (A new Sudan cheetah for people who don't know.) The new enclosure is impressive and new grass has been planted, a large wooden shelter with a log to get up on top of it has been built and a large grassy mound has also been installed. The former leopard gecko terrarium in the indoor viewing section has been covered up by a large sign which shows big cat camoflage. The indoor section still looks quite similar to how it looked before, aside from it being repainted a similar light mustard colour as before. Some of the wood has been replaced on the boardwalk but not all of it. A separation section outside the indoor house has been built too. Cleo was resting in her shelter the first time I looked for her but the second time I went to the enclosure, at about 4, she was walking up towards the indoor area, passing right by the glass, having a sniff around in her indoor area before running back out down to the shelter at the bottom of the enclosure. It was really good to see her so settled in to her enclosure already and she is surprisingly small for a cat able to take down and antelope twice her size :D

Here are some images (I will be able to upload them in about a month's time to the media section)

- The sloth enclosure is (I think personally) in need of having another species added to it or a refurbishment. Since they were added and all the birds (plus most of the planting) were removed, it has honestly just been a lot more boring visiting the exhibit. It used to be better when the hairy armadillos were actually active in their exhibit, but now they never venture out. The viewing for the three banded armadillos is poor and the sloths, although the star attraction of the exhibit, barely even do anything. Feira, for example, I don't think ever moves a single inch from her little box at the front of the enclosure unless there is food. The exhibit is so quiet now, such a poor rainforest imitation which now has very little plants in it, whereas Brilliant Birds was very dense and was always full of the calls from the many different bird species in the enclosure. Sorry for the huge rant, but it is my personal opinion.

- The former binturong enclosure, indoors and out, has been closed of for refurbishment:D hopefully for the promised pallas cat replacement. The armadillo enclosure next to it was closed too, I really hope they moved out and are getting something much more interesting to replace it.

- The east wing of living links is closed off for replacing the wood now, with the west wing back open.

- The new RRH enclosure is open, as already stated by @Scottish Wildcat, and it is very good. They have access to three of the four halves of the old pool, with the far back part being closed off. The indoor area is also good, with there being a small hardstanding part next to it. I think what they need to do now is get some companion for Thomas and Scott, the two hogs residing there.

- The koala enclosure still has zero development on it.
