Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo news 2024

So Priya is a grandchild of the other pair at Edinburgh.

It seems to me there are a lot of Red Pandas, and a lot of successful breeding too, in our UK zoos at present. Is there any major UK collection that doesn't have them in fact?

Highland Wildlife Park no longer holds the species, and to be honest I'm surprised RZSS is establishing a second pair at Edinburgh rather than having them up there!

Other than the already-mentioned London, the only other major ones to spring to mind are Howletts, Hamerton and Linton - none of which have ever held the species to my knowledge.

Kevyn (and Kitty) were only supposed to be temporarily moving from Highland Wildlife Park to Edinburgh Zoo while some building work was done, but it has been about 2 years now and Kitty has since died. Maybe Kevyn and Priya will end up moving back there at some point.

Some more great news, I do love the Red Pandas - last summer when I attended some of the special summer events where you could visit the Zoo before opening times the red panda was out and about at about 8.30am.

She's a pretty panda for sure, it was lovely seeing her as a cub. Here she is featuring in a recent Facebook post from Whipsnade. I hope she's enjoyed by the Edinburgh visitors!

In their native Himalayas, extreme weather like droughts and floods are damaging their fragile mountain forest habitat, as the bamboo red pandas rely on is sensitive to any changes in conditions. By taking action to tackle climate change, you can help save red pandas from extinction. #RedPandaWeek #InternationalRedPandaDay | Whipsnade Zoo

Yes I figured London was one. Hadn't thought of Howletts though.

I’m pretty sure that the plan is for them to move up north when the new enclosure is ready.

posted this morning ginger the red panda has died and a full post mortem will be carried out there hoping her kit is just old enough to survive on her own but keepers will keep a close eye on her its on there facebook page but cant link if anyones able to please

The sloth and armadillo house will be closed from Monday 4 November to allow essential maintenance to be carried out. Hopefully this work will only take about three weeks.
In the meantime, visitors will still be able to see Nico, Fe and the armadillos in their temporary new home behind Penguins Rock (opposite the drills):

That's awesome news, going to need to squeeze in another trip now - only just went on the 19th :p

The zoo have announced the birth of a Pygmy Hippo calf, a female who has been named, Haggis. She was born on 30th October.
And only two weeks after I visited as well. I wasn't planning on visiting Edinburgh again in 2025, but seeing as they now have a Moo-Deng I may have to arrange something.

I'm so excited for the zoo at the moment. There's a lot of really good species on show.

The arrival of Akkiko the Pallas Cat, and Haggis the baby pygmy hippo should hopefully bring in some attention both being very "meme-able" animals.

If the speculation over the website is correct and Nora the Drill has passed on this, whilst sad, might be good for the troop as the young male & females may have a little more seniority/opportunity to mate now the group dynamics shift.

I know Quabid the Indian rhino will be moving very soon, but another opportunity for an enclosure refresh and incomers. (It may also give me an opportunity for another holiday- we went to see Sanjay in Berlin after his depature. I like to think his ear twitches were at least him recognising an Edinburgh accent when we spoke to him )

They certainly only mention the names of three females and the male on the website now, indicating she has died (or at least been removed from display). I am sure the male and two younger females from Port Lympne will breed in due course, probably soon.
