Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo News 2025

The biggest thing any zoo can learn from Berlin is that every available space is used for animals.

There was one empty enclosure at Berlin with a large sign apologising that it was empty, I think it might have previously been the polar bear enclosure.

New male Capybara has arrived

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) has welcomed a new resident, 11-month-old Rodney, the capybara. The male joins his new Edinburgh Zoo roommates Luna and Cali, who arrived in February.

Capybaras, which are the largest rodents in the world, have quickly become a favourite among animal lovers worldwide. Rodney rose to fame on TikTok last year after being the only pup (also affectionately known as a babybara) born to mum Hoodoo at Dartmoor Zoo.

The wildlife conservation charity is slowly introducing Rodney to Luna and Cali in the hopes that they will have babybaras of their own in the future.

Excuse me asking but is your Avatar photo of the current male Drill at Edinburgh, or a different male?

Agreed there’s a lot of unused space and empty enclosures that they can do stuff with for example African plains enclosure is massive could do something with this area, the old panda enclosure beside the penguins which are hosting temp animals and the old monkey house next to the old panda enclosure they could rip the inside out and make it an indoor rainforest type enclosure similar to the sloth one with maybe crocodiles something like that

The old panda enclosure was still very good, i presume the sloth bear will be going there when he arrives. I wish they had a more clearer glass, the glass at Edinburgh for the pandas was always quite difficult to see, it was a bit of a shame.

Sorry when I say old panda enclosure I mean the old old panda enclosure the one right beside the penguins rock enclosure, not the most recent panda enclosure up at the top right of the zoo that’s where the sloth beers are going

The Binturong are in the old panda enclosure behind the Penguins saw this on the zoos website.

We are home to one binturong, a male named Tenzin, who arrived in 2024. You can spot Tenzin in his habitat by the drills.

I went last Saturday in the two old panda enclosures you have the red pandas in one and the drills in the other one which feels a bit of a waste I feel like if they wanted to it’s a big area they could easily knock the walls separating the enclosures and make it one big one or expand it out where the viewing glass is

I don't think the existing displays in these enclosures are a waste. Particularly for the Drills if they expect to breed them and expand the group. Afaik the Sloth Bears are scheduled to replace the Pandas in their newer enclosure.

I agree the drills are in a much better space than when they were in the monkey house. Does anyone know if anything will happen to the old Saki Monkey walkthrough?

Been looking at the Edinburgh app and it looks like the Nyala and Markhor have moved enclosures. Is that correct? Zoo apps can be ‘funky’ from time to time!

They haven't switched enclosures, the nyala are still up by the tigers, but the markhor have moved out of the panda enclosure (presuming so they can do work for the Sloth Bears). Now inhabiting the empty paddocks between the koala and wallaby walkthrough that previously held some bagot goat males. :)

The nyala are now next to the horses and gelada

Ah ok so the app is half right! I always keep up on other zoos around the UK so was just interested. Hopefully I’ll get a visit up to Edinburgh one day :)

According to Edinburgh and East newspaper, Haggis has been successfully been introduced to his father, Otto,5 months after his birth.
