Apologises if someone’s mentioned it before but incase anyone didn’t notice one of the male Przewalski horses moved from Edinburgh zoo to a zoo in Munich some time in July as part of their breeding programme as per article below. It means Edinburgh zoo now only has 2 Przewalski horses left in its collection wonder if they’ll get any more or move the remaining two on since they are meant to move into the old zebra enclosure with the camels.

I'm not sure exactly how long goral live, but Danling is almost 15 years old, so if that's considered elderly for the species, it wouldn't surprise me if the zoo just put something else in that enclosure when Danling passes.

Ah, I see. I suppose there's no real chance of getting more goral? They bred here, I think, and it's not a bad enclosure for the species.

Not going to lie, I do have a soft spot for the bagot goats, mainly because my nearest zoo Lake District Wildlife Park also has them, and it is a pretty breed.
 
A few updates from my visit today:

  • Qabid, Indian Rhino, is due to leave Edinburgh tomorrow morning for a collection in Europe, it was nice to see him one last time.
  • Lucu, Sumatran Tiger, is also due to leave (although no date has been announced), with a new male coming in. It has been discovered that Lucu can't breed, hence they need to move him on.
  • The Asiatic Lions are still being held separately, Bindee has some health issues that need to be fixed before she can be safely mixed with Jay again.
  • The fences around the former Saki Monkey walk through have finally been removed (the enclosure has been empty for some time).
  • The paths around the Bactrian Camel enclosure (formerly home to the Grevy's Zebra) are being repaired, so the camels are still off show, repair works are due to be complete in the next few weeks.
  • Both Red Panda's, Priya and Bruce, are sharing the enclosure at the front of the zoo. Priya was formerly held in one side of the old Giant Panda enclosure, beside the Drills - Tenzin, the Binturong now has access to this enclosure and it was nice to see him exploring outside today.

That is that then and settled. TBH: I did have an inkling that when announced it seemed to me more likely that the new exhibit at Wingham stood to have a better chance than the suggested Whipsnade or London option....
 
The zoo has warned of problems with importing Rhinos and Elephant. The zoo said controls imposed by DEFRA means a new pair of Indian Rhinos will be delayed . The zoo has written to DEFRA to warn them that current post Brexit administration means it is now practically impossible to import hoofstock into the UK. The new restrictions because of Bluetongue virus means any such animals coming into the country are subject to mandatory 30 days quarantine in a "vector protected facility ". However, the zoo has received no clarification on what such a facility is. The zoo has urged DEFRA to revise the legislation and introduce vaccination arrangements for zoos which would make it easier to bring animals in. It is estimated that only a fith of transferres had been allowed between the UK and Europe compared with pre Brexit levels. The zoo also added that the current restrictions were " ill defined and impractical " and creating a backlog of animals unable to move to the continent. Zoo biosecurity has not changed but the level of paperwork has. Edinburgh is hoping to bring in juvenile Rhinos from Ireland and Hungary but warned that this could take some time.
