Edinburgh Zoo Edinburgh Zoo News 2025

Has anyone seen the enclosure yet according to the map they are in beside the horses if that’s true it makes sense for that to be a highland area. I wonder if that means the horses are not moving beside the camels and that they might put some other types of animals in at the top of the zoo beside them as it’s a big area. I just don’t think it would make sense to move horses beside camels and leave the highland cows in that big enclosure on their own especially with the zoo running out of real estate for new areas/enclosures for new animals.
Having another look at the map on the website (assuming it's still accurate, correct me if I'm wrong), it looks like at the moment the horses are in a lower paddock next to the nyala, and the zebras are the only thing in those top paddocks. I still think it would be fine for the horses to move in with the camels and have the two cows in the empty paddock next to the zebras. They could even add more cows to fill the space out a bit more.

It’s quite a big enclosure the horses have access right to the top of that map right to the fence opposite the zebras unless they’ve enclosed it which is why I suggest keeping them there with the highland cows and maybe getting some other animals in beside the camels or zebras as I don’t think they have any real estate left for new areas/enclosures and new animals so multi mixed enclosures maybe the way to go like other zoos as much as I like highland cows it’s a bit underwhelming having them in a capital zoo in a massive enclosure on their own least if they are in with the horses can make it like a highlands area. Maybe get some ostriches or another type of antelope etc in with the camels would also be nice to see Tapirs back

I do think that for the zoo in Scotland’s capital city, highland cattle are an obvious and easy option and I’m surprised they have been absent for so long.
When was the last time Edinburgh had highland cows? I can't remember a time recently when they had them, unless it was many, many years ago before I really started keeping up with the place.

They had them when I first went in the early 90s, at the top of the hill. Not sure when they left the collection.

The zoo has announced that Sunday 26th is the last day that Haggis will be on view before her move to Wingham.
Sadly I've still never seen Haggis for myself, because my last visit to Edinburgh was before she was born and I'm not planning any more visits until next Summer, but I've looked at Wingham's website and I might add it to my short list of zoos to visit in 2026 or 2027 because it seems like a decent place.

The poll to decide the names of the two new Highland cows has ended, with the winning names being Nessie abd Thistle, though the post I read on Instagram didn't specify which was which.

Please could someone tell me where the ground cuscus are located within the zoo as I have not been able to find the enclosure the past couple of my visits.

Does anyone know what times the sloth bear and pallas cat are usually most active at the zoo?

The sloth bear was constantly moving during all of my visit, and the den is also on-show, so even if he's sleeping, you'll be able to see him. The cat is much trickier; I saw him around half an hour before the zoo closed only because a keeper entered the housing. He was fairly active at that time, running around, but I wonder if I'd had seen him if the keeper wasn't there.
