Just back from the zoo, will load some pics into the gallery.

Not realising today was the first day of the Easter holidays in Scotland, you can imagine my shock, when arriving at the zoo having to wait in queue for 15-20 minutes to get into the park, to anyonyone who has visited the zoo, it reached all the way back up to the car park booth, from the reception:eek:.
But i have to say i was probably the only one in that queue that was delighted, it was great to see the sheer volume of visitors, on this the first day of the holidays, long may it continue.

In the zoo itself first stop, the new Patagonian sealions, they look magnificent, the bull is going to be a brute of animal, the water in the pool though was looking distinctly pea soup green.
Up past the duck ponds, with a pair of white naped cranes and a single black stork, and past the new enclosure for the European beaver in one of the duck ponds.
Before this i should say i saw my first Stanley cranes, beautiful birds, sharing a paddock with the Bawean deer.
There was only 2 African hunting dogs in their enclosure, and in the pond of their enclosure were 2 common mallards, fighting viciously over a female, but the dogs were not in the least bit interested, but the public were 3 deep watching this squabble.
New arrivals in the African aviary were 4 vulturine guineafowl from Prague zoo.
The reptile exhibit in the hunting dog indoor area was occupied by a display of desert locust.
The 1.2 Malayan tapir were on show sharing the paddock.
The red river hog house was sealed off, the sow due anytime now, and the 2 other hogs have been moved in with the bongo.
Saw my first lesser galago in their nocturnal exhibit, lovely animals.
The European sousliks were on show too, after coming out of hibernation.
The tundra reindeer were looking good in the former vicuna paddock.
The African plains exhibit was full of young Grevy,s zebra, lesser kudu and lowland nyala. The Grevy's zebra foal will be about a year old now, but was having a great time chasing all the antelope.
The new wolf wood was coming along the new fencing is up, with an indoor observation area at the top of the enclosure, next to the playground, good to have the wolves back in their wolf wood.
The new female Amur leopard was on show, albeit with camouflage netting over the front of her enclosure.
The gelada family looked amazing from the alpha male right down to the newborns, a great display, and in a fantastic enclosure.
A single eclectus parrot has been moved into the indoor Australasian aviary in the koala exhibit.
The former binturong and margay enclosures are being redevelpoed for the Temminck's cat, with a female due soon.

This was my first visit to the living links exhibit, and i have to say i was blown away:).
This is in my book the best primate exhibit in the zoo, Budongo included, 2 shared outdoor paddocks, and 4 individual indoor dens, the capuchins and the squirrel monkeys may not be the first choice of primate in a zoo that boasts aye-aye, drill and purple faced langurs in their stock, but these animals captivated everyone in the house watching them, with so much to see, they make a great exhibit.

And round to rainbow landings, on my first visit i wasn't impressed with this exhibit, i was wrong!
The area looks great now, the separate aviary has now gone and is one huge area for the lorikeets, Victoria crowned pigeon, Nicobar pigeon and blue faced honeyeater, no sign of the potoroo though, but a friendly keeper directed me to a clump of bushes, and nestled in there, in the free flight area was the male lesser Malayan chevrotain born last year, an arms length away from me separated from the public by a piece of rope!, my highlight of the day.

The Sclater's blue eyed lemurs were 5 days into their mixing with the ring tailed lemurs and according to their keeper so good so far.
This friendly and informative keeper also told me that no replacement aye-aye has been sourced yet, and none were available.
So the plan to move the aye-aye to the former gorilla house is on hold, but the drills will be going and could be joined by a troop of olive baboons.

Animals not seen.

European beaver
Alaotran gentle lemur
warthog
Asiatic lion (my own fault went around their enclosure)
addax (unusual?)
Scottish wildcat
European beaver
bush dog
Pallas cat
Sumatran tiger
wolverine
Temminck's cat

Another exhausting day at the zoo:D

Great report Kiang, it sounds like you had a fun packed day! Isn't it amazing how time just runs away when you are in the zoo! We were there last Monday but I've still to upload the photos, I will try and do it later today. I'm off to view your gallery now!

sounds like you had a full day Kiang!!!

I never made it to Rainbow Landings on Sunday but I did see the breeding pair of chevrotain in the pudu houses across from the Monkey House (first time Ive seen them since last summer!)

rumour is the lions may be pregnant again, here's hoping!

Great report as ever Kiang,i spoke to the sealion keeper today and she says Sofas the male sealion is only half grown and he is going to be one fine speciman even if he is a big softy who is easily scared! They are hoping by next summer we might see some pups so fingers crossed.

the lion was in a cage at the top of the enclosure while the lionesses rested in the usual spot at the bottom so i dont know if thats got anything to do with them being pregnant but he was very vocal, spray marking and moving more than i have ever seen him in all my previous visits!

I also only saw 2 malayan tapirs today, mother and baby i think, but on my last visit i witnessed the adults mating and the baby got too close which agitated the male enough to chase her off which in turn brought out the maternal nature of the mother so maybe they have been seperated?

There was only one pygmy hippo out as well , did i read somewhere of a possible pregnancy? and i got my first look at the sousik and eurasion otter:)

Thanks Solari, were the addax out today, it was the first time in all my visits that i did not see them out. I have heard that the paddock is earmarked for a possible walk through Barbary macaque exhibit

i noticed the last few visits the addax were not out often apart from peaking out of the house

i heard about the barbary walk-through last year from one of the primate keepers

the extended group have integrated very well in the old gorilla house but not sure what is going to happen next as their original enclosure currently has the eurasian otters and may become part of the Panda exhibit

Yes the addax were out and i got a perfect view because they were sitting right next to the path.

A walk through Barbary macaque exhibit sounds interesting.

I'm not sure about this one, but i am excited about the possible arrival of a troop of olive baboons:D
Edinburgh, baboon capital of the UK!!!!!

Believe me a walk through Barbary Macaque exhibit is not that intreasting once you been in once.

Well I hope it does better than Marwell's tamarin walk-through. They only come into the main walk-through area at feeding time, if not they're at the very back or in the house.

As i said in my visit review i had to queue fo 15 - 20 minutes to get in and here are the numbers to prove it.
Visitor numbers have doubled from the same time last year on the easter weekend, a great result for the zoo. (And proud to say i was one of them ;)

Scottish Zoo Enjoys Bumper Easter Weekend Deadline Press & Picture Agency

I am talking gibberish, i was there last monday, not easter monday, 1st day of the school holidays, sorry for the misunderstanding.

Went to the zoo today and the lion house was closed off due to one of the lioness giving birth.

Went to the zoo today and the lion house was closed off due to one of the lioness giving birth.

Thanks for that bongo, good news hopefully a successful birth will follow and a lion enclosure full of cubs again, with the gelada babies, these are sure to be a huge drawcard for the zoo, and hopefully bring in even more cubs, all looking good for the zoo this year:)

I was at the zoo twice during the weekend (sunburnt both days!) and it was great to see it so busy!

all quiet at the lion enclosure so far but any day soon we should hear more

Has anyone been to edinburgh in the last few days? If so, is there any info around the enclosure about the lion cubs? Is it both females pregnant, or just the one? If only one, do we know which?

I was at the zoo yesterday, the lion enclosure was still closed and the keeper we spoke too said they were hoping the birth would be in the next few days. Hopefully tomorrows Zooblog will have more information.
