Lucy is no different than many elephants in the warmer climates of the US. Their problems developed before science determined that concrete substrate led to arthritis in the feet. Nearly all zoos have now changed their indoor substrates to sand, fine pebble, or rubber. No, we can not undo the damage done in the past, but there are many new procedures making life bearable for these elephants. These include medicated foot soaks, anti-inflammatories, cold laser, and even a new procedure used on NZP's Shanthi injecting plasma spun down from her own blood into the entire joint. This has been successful. Some in the group of 40-70-year-olds will face arthritis challenges, and there are now many ways to ensure an elephant can live life happily. Lucy would need this wherever she goes, and considering that she's done well for nearly 45 years in Edmonton, why on Earth should she be moved?
