Edward Youde Aviary: 22 May 2025
The Edward Youde Aviary is situated in Hong Kong Park. It opened in 1992, covers approximately 3000 square metres and the highest point is 30 metres above the floor. There is a single raised walkway through the aviary. It is open 9-5 every day, and is free to enter.
There is also an adjoining group of three individual smaller aviaries.
The pamphlet at the entrance claims they house seventy species of birds with around 550 individuals but this is not the case any longer. Currently there are about fifty species of birds in the walk-through aviary.
This photo by @Jackwow from 2013 shows an ID chart in the aviary entrance at that time, which does indeed depict 70 species:
One of the individual aviaries (this one for White-crowned Hornbills Berenicornis comatus):

........................................................................................
These species are held in the three smaller individual aviaries:
1
White-crowned Hornbill Berenicornis comatus
2
Great Hornbill Buceros bicornis
3
This third aviary had some discrepancies between what was signed and what was seen:
Signed species:
Old German Owl (a form of domestic pigeon with the following varieties named on the sign: Black Bar Shield, Fantail, Modena, and King Pigeon)
Nicobar Pigeon Caloenas nicobarica
Edward's Pheasant Lophura edwardsi
Victoria Crowned Pigeon Goura victoria
Rainbow Lorikeet Trichoglossus haematodus (the picture on the sign shows a Coconut Lorikeet rather than a Rainbow Lorikeet, and gives the distribution as "Bali, Lesser Sundas, Moluccas, New Guinea")
Species actually seen in this aviary:
Nicobar Pigeon Caloenas nicobarica
Lady Amherst's Pheasant Chrysolophus amherstiae
Pinon Imperial Pigeon Ducula pinon
Old German Owl (I'm not sure which varieties - their appearances didn't really match the pictures on the signage)
Victoria Crowned Pigeon Goura victoria
........................................................................................
Here I will list all the species which were signed within the walk-through aviary, and label them as "seen" or "not seen". Some species were very obvious within the aviary (especially the imperial pigeons), others I only saw once or twice.
