Saint Louis Zoo EEHV at St Louis

I just heard the news : 02/11/2009 - St. Louis Zoo elephant Jade still in "guarded" condition - STLtoday.com

Jade has faced several problems, after birth her mother Rani started to neglect her, I never heard of any improvement of the situation though. Hopefully she'll be ok. But going on the other incidents that have recently happened, the calves that have been diagonosed with Herpes they usually quite quickly after. :(

As long as they got to her quick and are flooding her with antivirals she theoretically should be ok. I would hate for the first zoo elephant death of 2009 to be a 23 month old.

Technically she would be the 3rd...I dont think any elephant has survived EEHV since the mid/late 1990s?

That's comforting news.... ( fingers crossed)

Very intersting and alarming article . I see that Emmett at Whipsnade came from Rosamund Gifford which is a 'hotspot' for EEHV . I think that one of his calves was a victim of the virus , hope no more are affected .

Would the calf your talking about be Aneena?

Yeah that was her. Hope he hasn't bought a strain of it to the UK.

Aneena was born in the uk though,... oh dear he might have already brought something in.

yeah, unfortunately no offspring left of him, or his father Thai for that matter.

Im beginnning to think Jade will live be the 4th to live this terrible disease. Shes been doing better throughtout the week but theres always the chance
