The linked news article mistakenly reports the pups were born in February. According to the zoo Facebook page, they were born in April (2021).
(edit): The wolves were transferred to El Paso from Phoenix in February, which is where the confusion in the article originates. Four of the six pups have been placed in litters in the wild, while two remain at the zoo (along with their parents and three older siblings born at Phoenix Zoo a couple years ago).

Construction of Penguin Habitat at El Paso Zoo to Begin

The exhibit will be built in the Americas section of the zoo directly across from the Reptile House and Spider Monkey enclosure. It will be home to a colony of warm-weather Magellanic Penguins which are found in South America.

Magellanic Penguins are commonly seen in Zoos and Aquariums and were chosen because they’re able to tolerate higher temperatures and more arid climates, such as ours.

Out of curiosity, how is the current U.S. population of Magellanic penguins doing? I don't seem to hear very much about the species, as most warm weather penguin news and exhibits seem to be directed towards the African and Humboldt species.

El Paso Zoo holds groundbreaking ceremony for penguin exhibit

Once complete, it will feature a rocky coast, an outdoor viewing area, an underwater viewing experience, and will serve as a natural habitat for penguins.

The exhibit will have interactive spaces for penguins, zookeepers, and guests. Part of the project includes outdoor seating, restroom facilities, a nursing room, and a picnic area.

The exhibit is set to open in 2023 and have a colony of around 20 penguins in the exhibit.

The El Paso Zoo selected Magellanic penguins to be part of the exhibit because they are from the warm and temperate coastal regions of South America including Argentina, Chile, and the Falkland Islands.

On January 27th, the zoo announced they are reopening to the public on February 10th. During this time, some indoor buildings will be closed, as well as the African Star Train, the Hunt Family Endangered Species Carousel, and the Copper Canyon Ropes Challenge Course will be closed.

On February 16th, the zoo announced they have rescued a (0.1) magnificent frigatebird from a recent snowstorm. Named Amelia, she was brought back to Florida and released back into the wild in March.

On April 16th, the zoo announced that they have acquired a (0.1) generic reticulated giraffe named Gigi from the Hogle Zoo in Utah in November 2020.

On May 30th, the zoo announced that on May 31st, they will reopen the Asian Forest Complex, the Ranch, the Kalahari, the Aviary, and the Hunt Family Carousel areas.

On June 12th, the zoo announced that (0.0.4) Mexican grey wolves that were born at the zoo in April have been placed in wild dens in Arizona and New Mexico.

On July 6th, the zoo announced they have renovated their Geoffrey's spider monkey exhibit after the incident above.

On July 7th, the zoo announced they have acquired a (0.1) collared peccary named Yucca after she was found by New Mexico Fish and Game and was transferred to a local wildlife rehabber.
