Did the calf born in November at Night Safari survive? It was a male I believe, but it was never posted on the elephant database.

Also are the young females at the singapore zoo ever going to be bred?
-Gambir
-Aprila
-Jati (?)
wasn't Chayang recomended for breedings?

Is Sang Wira going to remain at the Night Safari? If so couldn't he be used for breeding with the females at the zoo and the females other than his own mother at the Night Safari? Or is he going to be transfered to another zoo to prevent competition between he and his father?

If you or anyone else can provide me with more information regarding the birth and sources for citation, I will update the database.

@ DP: The zoo and the night safari's main obective was to breed Gambir for a period of time she visited Chawang every evening, I'm not sure what they are doing now but the article was poster three years ago and Gambir never fell pregnant.

Intan and Aprila are of the Sumatran subspecies, according to another thread the zoo doesn't not want to "interbreed".

Sang Wira was going to transfer zoos however the plan was abandoned and now he his too large to travel on an aircraft.

Hi DP,

The male calf should be doing okay, haven't heard otherwise.

The zoo has attempted to mate Gambir and Jati with Chawang (adult bull), but no success yet. I think they will keep trying.

Sang Wira seems to be staying as the Night Safari recently built a new enclosure for him. He may well contribute as a breeding stud when he matures.

I must add that these are my own observations and opinions, lest the zoo authorities accuse me of misrepresenting them. ;)
 
Oh, I see. Hopefully the soon have more success with the breeding of elephants! Do you think AI from a Sumatran male may become a possibility? Or they just don't want to breed them in general so they can be used for shows and rides?

About Sang Wira that's good news! I was hoping he would come to the U.S. though..;)

I think the Sumatrans won't be bred. It probably makes more sense for Singapore to concentrate on breeding E.m.indica given the lack of space.
