I was at Whipsnade yesterday and noticed that one of the elephant cows was shut in the house for most of the day with a small calf. Is this a very recent birth? Does anybody know the current status of the asian elephant herd at Whipsnade and if any of the cows are in calf?

I thought the calf looked very small. Excellent news that the move from Twycross has resulted in a birth!! They have had some very bad luck at Whipsnade over the past couple of years with the elephants. Loosing two calves to EEHV and the loss of a cow whilst giving birth to twins must have been very difficult for the elephant team. It kind of reminded me of all the problems with breeding elephants at Port Lympne over the last 25 years. So glad they have some good news to celebrate at Whipsnade.
