This is great news, there will be a lot of excited Australian zoochatters, and now the race begins for the first videos and pics.
May this be the start of great things for the Australian breeding programme. It has been a long journey to get to this point, hopefully this is the start of a long line of successful births.

Thanks Jay! I was sure that l would hear this news here first.

The beauty of this ZooChat forum is the ability to hear important news before anyone else. Also, as soon as a new exhibit opens at a zoo there is a ZooChatter there within days with a camera. Long live this site!:)

Yes Torie, you win and you get!!

now I'm waiting on the melbourne births.

congrats to traonga zoo and Thong dee.

Great news and congratulations to the elephant team at Taronga

Indeed, great news for Asian elephants in Australia. Remember people said it could never be done and the elephants should not have been imported at all! And now NOW it is here upon us ... Australia's first homegrown elephant birth. Congrats to commitment, dedication and careful management put in by all of the entire Taronga elephant team.

Post Scriptum:
snowleopard, I agree and am fully with you. This is what makes this forum so absolutely worth being on ... read some informative piece of news in the fullest knowledge that one or several Zoochat forumster(s) is (are) there to comment, enjoy the moment and share it with us all!

I'm secretley glad that it was a boy...Although I am extremely excited about our first elephant birth I really want Melbournes plan for a cohesive, matriachal herd to work better then Tarongas. :)

The news said a competition will be held for the public to name him.

I don't think those photos are from Taronga - I don't recognise any of the people in the pics.

:p

The news said a competition will be held for the public to name him.

Glad to hear there has been a successful outcome(so far, anyway) after all the fanfare.

Maybe Zoochatters should have their own naming competition too. A good name might get noticed.....:) I'll start; 'Taronga' or 'Ronga'....?

I say Plai Tong, Plai is thai for a male elephant. And Tong, gold after his mum.

i was at the zoo all yesterday (becuase i work and study there not just trying to see the elephant :P) and the zoo has installed plasma tvs that show fotoage of the elephant just after he was born and will show him in the barn when he gets a bit older.

there is also going to be a special episode of the zoo dedicated to his birth!

p.s those screen shots are from Taronga :p

Why is there what looks like a harness and lead on the little guy? I have noticed on video that a keeper at times is holding the end of the lead?

Also do they really need to be using all that flash photography?

The harness is to support the calf aswell as for safety of the keepers if an emergency situation was to occur. As far as I believe it was only used within the first day or two of the birth and the only in the barn...

As for the flash photography, agree with u there but it is the media frenzy surrounding this australian first birth...
