his name has been announced! its luk chai! it means golden son or something like that

According to the articles I read it means 'my son'and some of the comments posted on those articles were quite scathing about the choice.

Scathing in what way. In most of the advertising the keepers said they wanted a thai name, that was different to the rest easy to say (not too many syllables). The general Public doesn't understand the importance of the name when training elephants.

some of the names suggested we just ridiculous. lots of people wanted him to be called Micheal in memory of Michael Jackson! others wanted banjo like banjo Patterson and others even said tim tam. so i for one am very happy with what they chose!

I think that the First Aussie Elephant should have an Aussie name... Just my 2 cents
there's nothing worse than seeing kids reading names of signs and having absolutley no idea how to say it.

Interesting the names they give to Taronga's bull elephants!

The first was Dundry. The next was Gandhi; then came Herman, who had a name change to He-Man. The current bull is, as we all know, Gung (which means "prawn"). Now we have little Bok Choy (oops, sorry - I mean Luk Chai).

Scathing in that callig him 'my boy' was an affront to Thais who would never call their son 'my boy' Like we would never call our sons 'boy' (except Tarzan of course:D)

I wouldn't be surprised if the name "Cooper" had been suggested too.

:p

Hix

They specifically said to suggest a Thai name!

I'm wondering to see if the next calf is a bull if the name pattern will continue.

Pornthip is due around February of march next year. and Park boon is due in early 2011.
