This behaviour occassionally occurs with red deer too- if one turns up in an area(or escapes a deer farm perhaps) where there are no other red deer, it will associate with cows rather than be alone- if seen behaviour this in both sexes.

Marineland Niagara
I once saw a performing elephant seal (presumably northern) at the Marineland Park at Niagara Falls, Canada.
It wasn't viewable outside of the show (which also included Californian Sealions, Bottlenose Dolphins & Killer Whales) and its part in the show as pretty brief (and didn't involve any swimming).
