Elephant SSP

Thats very exciting! I cant wait for SDWAP to start sending their "babies" every to genetically revitalize the captive population.

In the next decade, they really need to think about getting a new bull and sending out their current one, Mahabulane.

I also believe that the SSPs are going to try and keep mothers/daughters together in breeding reccommendations. But Im sure there will be plenty of boys to ship around.

Either way, the elephant breeding program is still young and basically most of the breeding elephants are considered founders at this point. The African and Asian elephant captive populations are probably the most genetically diverse of all the captive breeding programs.

Your right Umngani is pregnant and so is Ndlula. Ndlulamitsi was the first to give birth of this herd -- to Vus'musi who was not fathered by Mabu -- so Ndlula and Mabu still make a good pair.

Umgani was impregnated in late 2007 and Ndula was probably sometime in the summer so it will probably be January/Febuary 2010

I'm beginning to think that Swazi might have reproductive issues that aren't letting her be impregnated as when I was at SDWAP back in October, Swazi was being followed and mounted the whole time by Mabu but nothing really seemed to happen

I also have a slight hunch that maybe the reason shes not getting pregnant is because she is very dominant and that she may actually be dominating him enough that he isn't able to mate with her long enough or as much as he should

In this situation I think the sanctuary might be the better choice or another zoo. For 1) her situation is a lot different from Billy's. It's not like her new exhibit would be done in the next year or two. 2) She is a female therefore keeping her alone is much different than keeping Billy alone. Bull elephants are much more solitary. 3) Her enclosure just may be the worst elephant exhibit in the country (besides Six Flags).

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo receives 3rd Elephant

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Welcomes New Elephant / Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Southern Colorado, Breaking News, News, Weather, School Closings, Traffic from KKTV 11 News

Now that the AZA is highly reccommending zoos to house at least 3 female elephants, many elephants from private individuals are coming out the woodwork and enlarging the current SSP populations. The most recent came to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs, CO. Malaika, a young female African Elephant, arrived at the zoo on December 13th.

This now leaves 36 zoos with less than three female elephants.

Jackson's son, Callee was transfered to Birmingham.
The cow barn at the ICC is going to be built this year (which at capacity it can hold 20 females). So I think it is a possibility that the herd at pittsburgh is transfered to Somerset.

Would be nice to have an update on the Asian elephant breeding program since we have had so much discussion on transfer of European born elephant bulls to the States.
