Elephant birth at Pittsburgh

how are nan and moja at pittsburgh with their pregnancies, according to some news reports, they were due nearly a month ago.

Funny you say that...a female calf was born this afternoon to Savannah

Species with longer gestations dont always tend to birth near the due date. For example, okapi have a 440 day gestation. However most of my females calve around 420-30 days. So I would expect elephant managers to anticipate a birth with a widge range, but focusing on the possibility of a birth that could occur sooner than expected.

Well, there are so many AZA accreddited zoos with awful, outdated elephant facilities that this alone doesn`t mean anything. AZA minimum standards for elephants are pittyful. I have no doubt that the sanctuary in Tennessee would be a much better place for her.

Can you tell me his family tree?
Is he a full third gen. ie: in both mother and fathers line?

Chuck isnt a full third generation...The sire Rex is a founder. The dam's line goes like this

Mali born in Syracuse NY to Indy (founder) and Targa who was born in 1983 to Roman Schmidt's elephant herd (probably at the old Circus World place) to Vance and Birka (both founders).

Just wanted to put up more updated info on Pittsburgh Zoo.There are actually two males,Callee and Jackson and 6females,Moja,Savanna,Tasha,Victoria,Angelina and Zuri

Thanks zoogoer, I forgot to add the zoo's newest birth to the thread! They'll be getting two cows more very soon at their new conservation center.

how are only two coming from the Philedelphia?I thought there were three?.The Chai thing is really sad.She already lost Hansa and now the other calf.i Like how even though they only have one acre, they don't try cramming like 12 elephants in.

i'd be thinking that Ambika at National Zoo is now on of the oldest as she turned 60 this year
