Toronto Zoo Elephant updates?

Just wondering if anyone's seen the elephants recently. I've been really curious too see how they're doing, especially with the deaths of Patsy and Tequilla so close together, and I've read that they're supposed to be extremely intelligent when it comes to these sorts of things.

I was just thinking about this. I'll likely be at the zoo on Christmas Eve (easily the best day to go to the zoo) and I'll go check on them then. They did still seem to be still grieving when I went there last time in October.

Excellent :) - I'll be dropping by in the new year too, and hopefully by then they'll have cheered up (depressed elephants are not fun to see)

Hi there,
Here's the inside scoop:
Don't count on seeing the elephants in the next few months. Winter came up on us pretty early, and there have been very few days when the elephants have been able to get outside over the past month (?) due to either temperature or paddock conditions.

Things have definitely settled down after Tequila's death, and overall it has been much "easier" for the elephants than when Patsy died. For one, Tequila was near the bottom of the totem pole, so there was no shuffle in leadership like when Pat died. Thika was pretty distraught for a few weeks after her mom died, and she had to adjust to a different living set-up inside (she used to spend the nights together with Tequila). However, now that Thika is "over the hump", she is much calmer (and less likely to instigate aggressive interactions with Toka), although she (Thika) did put the chase on her (Toka) when they were out a few days ago.

Thanks for the update Ungulate...I was specifically worried about Thika- but it's good to hear she and the other elephants are adjusting.

It is good to hear that the elephants are doing well. Aside from that is there any new news on a new elephant exhibit?

There was a fesibility study done/going to be done to see if it would be worth the money to build a new exhibit.

If it gets the green light, it would be awesome and would hopefulyl bring a few new species to the oo along with it ( black rhino, mongoose, a weaver bird aviary would all be awesome). If it does go through, it will greatly expand the elephant exhibit by several acres and would include a larger barn and a large indoor area

The hippo exhibit was consideried in the plan as well, I think in order to expand the elephant exhibit they will need to move the hippos.

I'm even more anxious!! I would love to see the Elephant and Hippo enclosures redone. Especially the hippos, they should add an underwater viewing area. Almost like the Hippo exhibit at the San Diego Zoo

If they do move and they don't have a use for the fur seal exhibit. They should demolish it and create a brand new hippo exhibit

They coud always expand back towards that forest too?

Wait a minute, thats a cliff, never mind. lol

Yeah, they could do that. I wish they put puffins or penguins in the Tundra Trek though =s

That would be clever, The underwater viewing areas are so ugly x__x it's all concrete and all. They should have those canopies like they have for the hippo exhibit at San Diego Zoo.

Yea it would look really nice, and the public should be able to see the hippos in the winter!
