Elephants in Australia and New Zealand

the elephants name was ranee

ranee and burma were long time companions to one another. in 1998 the decison was made by the zoo's vet team to operate on a 'vaginal wart' which had devloped between ranee's legs and was causing her both physical discomfort but she had also become the subject of ridicule. besides the welfare considerations, the zoo has a policy of not displaying deformed or sick animals, so the zoo had an obligation to try and fix the growth.
the operation was apparently successful but 3 days later ranee collapsed and was unable to rise.
whilst taronga has a long history with elephants, particularly long-lived ones, there were also several tragic deaths in the past, particularly involving moving the elephants or treating them. thats why i not only like the new facilities but also the hands-on approach, which if its succesful long-term, could result in a higher standard of care for these animals.
moving from asian elephants to africans, we could have actually had quite a significant herd of these animals too, if not for several accidents and premature deaths...

lets face it - elephants don't thrive in zoos. they may survive, they may even breed, but they really never thrive. and this situation in australia is no exception

well they arent really thriving in the wild either at the minute so heres hoping it will change for the best on both counts ;)
pat have you heard anything about melbourne zoo's attendance figures in the victorian newspapers yet?

becuase adelaide was pretty forward thinking compared to the other 3 major australian zoo societies. basically adelaide had a terrible small old elephant enclosure but the zoo also owned an new open-range facility (monarto) that could better care for her. its a shame she died, had monarto continued to house asian elephants, there may have been more of a precident for the other zoos to follow suit and transfer their animals to their open range facilities...

Hey guys,
I've spoken to Shane Lennon alot lately about the elephants his family own.
If you look you will find that Burtons, Lennon Brothers and Stardust Circus all had elephants at some point within the last 7 years. The problem here is all three of those circuses are owned by the lennon family which makes it very difficult to determine what elephants they had as they did often swap, I also found an article a few years ago that had protestors at Stardust because of Arna but the circus had called te sisters circus lennon brothers to bring three of their elephants to show that she sometimes dis have companionship. So with Janlin Circuses pty ltd (the company that owns the above mentioned circuses) it is very hard to get exact numbers. there seems to be no records of what happened to the rest of Janlin's Elephants.

Thanks!

Doesn't anyone have any information about the history of Adelaide and Monarto?

Five female Asian elephants have been at Adelaide/Monarto:

Miss Siam, arrived 1883 from Thailand to Melbourne, moved to Adelaide in 1884, died in 1904.

Mary Ann, arrived in Adelaide in 1904 (unknown origins), died in 1934.

Lilian, arrived in Adelaide from Singapore Zoo in 1934, died 1956.

Samorn, arrived in Adelaide in 1956 from Duist Zoo, moved to Monarto in 1991, died in 1994.

Tara, arrived in Adelaide from Singapore Zoo in 1963, transfered to Sole Bros circus in 1965.

I hope this fills in some of your gaps!

Thank you very much Zoopro!

Today I surfed the internet again and found a link wich contains some information about Tara.
She was still alive with Sole Brothers' December 1981!

The Lion park that used to be here in Brisbane had an Asian cow elephant for many years that was i was told an ex circus elephant, I think they used to call it Arbo or abbo. i think i still have a few pics from 1973 of her.

The Lion park that used to be here in Brisbane
You mean the Lion Park situated in Beenleigh, near Brisbane on the Gold Coast?
This is the information I found on the internet.
According to the pages I visited this park was owned by the Bullens family.

Yes that is right, it was half way between Brisbane and the Gold coast, it has been closed for many years now.

It's been a while since my last post.
So thanks Mark for the pictures and for all the information given by all of you! :)

As of today I want to complete my information on Taronga Zoo's elephants.
At the moment they have 5, but in their history there where many others.

Dont know who this is, but maybe going by the tiny ear size it looks like a Sumatran sub species to me

Hi Douanita, If this is a male, at Taronga, in 1950, then it must have been Gandhi. He was the only male elephant at Taronga at that time. He arrived in early 1950, and died in 1968. The previous male, Dundry, died in 1923. He-Man arrived in Sydney in 1963.

So for 5 years they kept two male elephants?!
Gandhi was adult at that moment and Heman about 10 years of age.
