Elmwood Park Zoo Elmwood Park Zoo News

I visited the zoo today and here are some updates:
1.Saki the red fox’s former exhibit now has wall covering it, and the pathway is blocked.
2.Penny the alligator is temporarily living in the jaguar yard(without jaguars, of course!)so the three jaguars time share the indoor exhibit area at this time.
3.The pathway to the bobcat exhibit and alligator exhibit in the Wetlands is blocked.
4.We can no longer feed the barn animals(goats and sheep).
5.I didn’t see the former gray wolf exhibit, but I think the canine section should be gone now since Saki the red fox died. The pathway was blocked I think.
6.There is now fence in front of the Slash the red panda’s indoor space so visitors do not touch the glass.
7.One of the diamondback terrapins was separated from the other two in another exhibit, I’m not sure why.
8. The Patagonian Mara are not in the old capybara building, outside of the wildlife lodge building. There is a low barrier in the middle(I’m not sure why but maybe the maras are still getting used to their new space).
9. Apparently for giraffe feeding you there is now only one person allowed at the deck so I had to wait 30 minutes.
10.The peccary exhibit said that the animal was temporarily off exhibit. I’m not sure why, but maybe the peccary was under vet care.
11. The pond exhibit where the capybara and Muscovy duck used to live before they got moved to the Wetlands is now empty.
12.Birds of paradise was closed today
Animals I didn’t see
-Bobcat
-Chacoan peccary
-Black rat snake
-Yellow crowned Amazon parrot
-Yellow naped Amazon parrot
-Canary winged parakeet
-Silver teal

The "why", and all of the empty exhibits, are because of the hurricane damage mentioned in the post above yours. Several exhibits, like the new mara one, were destroyed, and others were badly damaged due to flooding, trees damaging fencing, etc.

Yes for 8 and 9 you may be correct. For number 10, the capybara and Muscovy duck moved to the Wetlands before the storm. They used to occupy the now empty pond exhibit. Both capybaras are no longer alive so the zoo doesn’t keep them anymore, but the zoo still has the Muscovy duck and he now lives with nene geese. For number 7, all 3 terrapins were in wildlife lodge. I don’t think the exhibit was damaged, for this I am really not sure why one terrapin was separated. Maybe one hurt the other, I’m not sure.

I have questions for people that go to EPZ more than me. @TinoPup @Wyman @Kevin2342
1. Was the Jaguarundi idea scrapped?
2. Is the Siberian Tiger exhibit still going to be built? If so where?

I assume it was scrapped, I haven't heard it mentioned in a long time :(
2. That I'm not sure about, but I'd guess no, at least not for several years. Between covid, damage from storms in June, and then damage from the hurricane in August, they're really strapped for money right now and are working on fixing damaged exhibits and then improving them so that when the next storms come, there isn't so much damaged.

Well at least it's happening. I wasn't sure since it was announced in the summer of 2019 and I haven't heard any further news.

Some updates from my last visit:
1. The otters were not out, the keepers were cleaning the pool
2. Penny, the alligator is back in her exhibit and the jaguars got their house back
3. Joanie, the Chacoan peccary is in the renovated old wolf exhibit and the zoo hopes to get a second peccary. There are barriers between three yards so if the two peccaries don’t get along they can be separated. The two peccaries may or may not get along for many reasons but I assume mainly Joanie’s advanced age.
4. There is a side yard behind a wall in the former red fox exhibit, and the two zebras rotate.
5. One diamondback terrapin named Cartier is separated temporarily from Mr.T and Tiffany due to a skin issue, and she was off-exhibit.
6. The goal is for the new Patagonian maras to live with the saki monkeys and Michael the green iguana.
7. The barrier between the old peccary exhibit and the old pond exhibit where the capybaras and Muscovy duck used to live has been removed, and the section is empty.

Adding on to that, the desert tortoises are now in Trail of the Jaguar with the chuckwallas and quail. Also, Buckwheat and Rex the Amazon parrots are no longer in the side aviary beside birds of paradise, instead they are in the main birds of paradise walk-through with the sun conures and the blue-and-gold-macaw. The canary-winged parakeets and one of the conure flocks moved to another zoo so BOP is more dismal now. The side space is now an exercise yard for some other animals.

What happened to the burrowing owls in trail of the jaguar?

What is housed in the terrarium next to the White-throated Woodrat, because when I went, there was nothing in there.

Do you know where the canary-winged conures went to and where Elmwood got them from?

I’m not sure, a keeper told me that they went. They also had two conure flicks and one of them moved with the parakeets. The zoo still has 13 conures.

Some observations from my last visit
-The fence in front of the red panda’s inside area to prevent people from touching the glass was removed. I think that was a bad idea, in case some people disobey to the non-touch rules and COVID-19 spreads.
-I didn’t see the ocelot, it did not say why.
-There is now glass in front of the alligator exhibit in the more elevated viewing area. This is for the winter.

Forgive me ... perhaps off-topic and no disrespect, but it is in the name: Every time I note a news items from the Elmwood Zoo Park I invariably get images in my head of the late Blues Brothers - Elwood! Well, Penns. gets to decide a lot these days, I guess!
