We've noticed that some embedded/attached photos on my most recent travel thread have disappeared after a while. Although it's more of a work-around than a solution, LaughingDove has pointed out that the 'embed' links actually change a few hours after uploading, so avoidance of embedding photos shortly after uploading would seem to help. However, we can't yet explain why photos which have been attached to posts are also disappearing.
