Emi is dead.

Looking to the future, could artificial insemination prove to be an option for furthering the captive breeding programme once Suci is mature? I am aware that Sumatran rhinos are induced ovulators but ovulation can be stimulated with drug therapy and I am sure that semen must be available from Torgamba (now at Way Kambas but previously at Port Lympne) and other unrelated males (who unfortunately have since died). If any zoo could make this happen then Cincinnati is the place... I fully realise that this probably hasn't been tried previously but maybe now is the time to consider such an approach.

This has created a major problem for them, just when the programme(via Emi's breeding success) was becoming established. I imagine they hoped she might produce two or three more calves in her breeding lifetime.

For Suci the future is unclear. AI? Torgaba's semen is of poor quality I believe, but maybe they could try with that of another male. Should they risk capturing an unrelated male as a future mate for her? And what to do with Harapan long term?

Am hoping this will become clear in the next year.

This would be a good alternative, though due to the deaths of some many captured sumatran rhinos many activists would probably prevent this. Though Torgamba still does show sign of sexual activity he has been seen mating with a female ( Bina I think it is) a pregnancy hasn't been confirmed because most likely what was said poor quality.
His predicted age is around 26-28. Is he too old to be fertile? In comparision how old is Ipuh?

Harapan I think could possibly go to Way Kambas as well. Although him and Andalas are full related brothers, two studs amongst fertile females is a better chance at pregnancy.
In one incident of elephant AI. Pornthip of Taronga zoo had three seperate donors. Bong Su ( the father of her unborn calf), Chawang of Singapore zoo and his 8 year old son Sang Wira.

From all this debate on the two threads, it just goes to show how precious Emi was. :(

I believe Torgamba is (or was) in not very good health though he may have improved recently- there doesn't seem any recent news about him. His fertility problem may be related to that. Or maybe not.

Ipuh's age is unknown- possibly similar to Torgamba's. A male should be fertile if he is healthy, even into old age.

Emi was indeed the central core around which the current breeding programme revolved.:(

Sorry but what are you asking here?

As long as there is a female and a male , we should be alright and as the captive population stands at 4.3 (I think) we still have some hope.

god, i know what, err.. mating is:p

a breeding is not a simple puting a male and a female into a padock together

Sorry but how are we supposed to know what you mean when you post

can the rhinos still breed without Emi?

Replying with as long as there is a male and a female this without the clarification (which you have yet to provide and never do when questions are asked) I feel is a sensible answer to a very silly post.

Yes Emi is sort of an exception to the rule, but hopefully the techniques and experienced gained with Emi will help to ensure other females breed.

So don't be so quick to post something that is ill thought out in the first place and you may find that you start getting some intelligent response and people will treat you more like an adult than a child.

This might possibly mean that Ipuh from now won't be a father again. Andalas and Harapan can hopefully carry off where he left, though I do, yes think the biggest dilemma is with Suci.

Yes, its a bit ironic that the only proven captve male now is both in America and is pretty old too. I really don't know how they will overcome this whole difficult situation but I'm sure there must be some plans.

Harapan being still very young, can be discounted for breeding for the next five or six years so there is plenty of time for decisions to be made about his future.
