Press release regarding Emi's passing: Welcome to the Cincinnati Zoo
Sorry but where is the press release? I cannot find it on the website.
When you go to the site, it is in the lower left hand corner of the front page.
I had been wondering why she was not on display as much in recent months. However, it is still really sad news. Reading the news made me remember that all Sumatran's in the US are related. We'll need new breeding blood if the US has any hope in being part of the revival of the species.
This is truly horrific news. Rest in peace, Emi, and my thoughts are with the keepers and the Cincinnati Zoo.
That's awful. This is the most bummed out I can remember being about a zoo animal death.
i hope they get a new one in asap to avoid long term probelms with the breeding program
The problem is its just about the most difficult animal on earth to replace. They need either a young adult female to breed with their old male Ipuh, or a young adult male unrelated to his daughter Suci. This, particularly the latter option, can only really happen if one is secured from the wild.
Inbreeding is better then no breeding at all if you deal with such a rare species (less then 300 in the wild!!). Therefore, I hope Suci will get pregnant soon, and after her father`s death, the zoo could still continue to breed her with Harry. I am very sure that any wild-caught animals (if poaching victims or orphans should turn up again) would go to Way Kambas/Sumatra.
