Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden Emi Passed Away

I had been wondering why she was not on display as much in recent months. However, it is still really sad news. Reading the news made me remember that all Sumatran's in the US are related. We'll need new breeding blood if the US has any hope in being part of the revival of the species.

Very true, Suci is the main hope of the breeding programme now.
 
This is truly horrific news. Rest in peace, Emi, and my thoughts are with the keepers and the Cincinnati Zoo.
 
oh my gosh no!!!!! I just found my love of rhinos. I do hope Ipuh is around for a few more years.
Emi was something fantastic, 8 pregnancies & 3 succesful calves. ( 5 were miscarriges)
 
i pretty much agree with all the comments so far, i was very sad when i found this out, and i hope they get a new one in asap to avoid long term probelms with the breeding program

The problem is its just about the most difficult animal on earth to replace. They need either a young adult female to breed with their old male Ipuh, or a young adult male unrelated to his daughter Suci. This, particularly the latter option, can only really happen if one is secured from the wild.

That’s if Suci will breed, as I mentioned before it won't do too much harm to try her with a related male to get her to calf for the first time before looking at sourcing another male.
 
Inbreeding is better then no breeding at all if you deal with such a rare species (less then 300 in the wild!!). Therefore, I hope Suci will get pregnant soon, and after her father`s death, the zoo could still continue to breed her with Harry. I am very sure that any wild-caught animals (if poaching victims or orphans should turn up again) would go to Way Kambas/Sumatra.

Anyone know of any news at Way Kambas, as breeding seems to be a no go there?
 
I think it`s waaay too early to say that breeding in Way Kambas is a no go, Andalas is just 8 and has just reached sexual maturity while Torgamba is old and sickly. Give Andalas him a bit of time to practice.

oh no! this is really bad news.

theres not much to say - the zoo now has to inbreed. hopefully they will get some new genetics further down the line from way kambas given the good will they showed by loaning andalas.

i'm still hoping for torgamba to produce some young but i'm not holding my breath.
 
Cincinnati will NOT breed Succi with her Brother or father, there are other plans for the Sumatran Rhinos in the USA , much better than Inbreeding, which isn't better than no breeding.
