I like news threads per year, so i started a new news thread for Emmen...

Elephant Mingalar Oo just gave birth, the news states that "mother and son are doing well". Father will be Radza. Official press release should follow shortly...

More males for Emmen :(

Just what the dams desire.

Sex ratio should probably be considered in relation to social position / groupdynamics of this group.

The calf's name is Shwe Myarr meaning Golden Arrow,

This is absoulutely ridiculous! another male for emmen. (sigh)

A plausible theorie that i heard recently is that the cause of the many bulls isn't the "fault" of the fathers like many always thought, because Radza and Naing Thein don't have any genetical band but both have so many sons in Emmen.

The females plus Naing Thein came all from the same trader in Burma. It's not unthinkable that the elephants are related in some way and that they all care genes that determine that many boys get born.
If Naing Thein is also related , a cousin or something like that, then both of the parents gave the gene to their youngsters. Making the chance that Mingalar Oo, Ma Palai and Ma Yay Yee give birth to males even higher.

But even if this is true, there should be more females! It's just bad luck, because the reproduction goes so well. And even though most youngsters are males, they are more than welcome!

So is the theory your trying to portray that inbreeding causes a skew towards males? Why is that the case?

I'm not saying that it was inbreeding that causes the many males. The females don't have to be all sisters are cousins or something like that. Their relationship can even be a bit further.
It's like families that cary a gene for red hair. You sometimes see that in some families you have many red haired children.
Well, if you have some girls of such a family and they get children with a cousin or a cousin of their father, a cousin of their cousin or something like that, who also carries the gene, than the chances of having a child without red hair are shrinking.

The theory I'm talking about suggests something like that but then with genes that cause the birth of mostly males in stead of ginger hair.

"Radza" the 45 year old bull Asian elephant, fell into the moat surrounding his enclosure, or more likely pushed on Sunday, thousands of visitors were evacuated from the zoo as a precaution.

DutchNews.nl - Elephant returns to his enclosure

So Radza's fabulous long tusks are no more, or at least one isn't. They were very lucky he suffered nothing more serious than that though.

If you watch carefully, another elephant butts the one standing next to Radza, and as a result that female's rump swings around and knocks him off balance, so it was accidental (to him at least).

If emmen is without a bull rhino it must have happened last week, because I saw him last weekend. Either that, or ISIS is wrong.

A giraffe has been born last saturday. Yesterday 2 spectacled bears have arrived out of france, they will inhabit the former kodiak bear enclosure. This enclosure will be adapted to fit their needs, and will open again at april 4th.

elephant htoo kin aye and her newborn calf have died today. Htoo kin aye looked weakened, so the caretakers separated her form the rest of the herd. In the stable she fell two times, the first time she was able to get up, but she died shortly after the second time. Because her newborn calf also made a very weakened impression, the zoo vetenarian and the caretaker made the unanumous decision to euthanize him.

Rest In Peace, Htoo Kin Aye, mother of the herd :(

The emmen herd is completely torn apart. Htoo yin aye and ma palai do not get along with htoo kin aye's daughters, and with htoo kin aye gone open warfare broke out. Now htoo yin aye and ma palai will have to move to another zoo.

More positive news; emmen received 7 juvenile arapaima's last week.
