Dierenpark Emmen (Closed) Emmen Zoo news

Just out of curiosity, what sort of methods are they trying?

I don't know. I do know they are trying everything they can, and emmen also employes biologists, so I would say, every possible method. But I don't think there's that much they can do about it, and even if there's some circumstance that increases the chance of male's being born, there still are too much males being born. Even then the number of females being born should have been higher then it is now.

Burmese for "Storm", named after the rather stormy weather at the time of his birth, fitting for a sky born elephant, manly for a bull elephant and easy to pronounce.

Unt Bwe has been separated from the rest of the herd, because has started to show adolescent behaviour since the birth of Mong Tine. He will probably be moved to another zoo.

Really wonder why, could it be because of an acidic diet? ( just guessing obviously it's much more complicated than that)

By looking the older news from Emmen Zoo I saw UntBwe mentioned the birth of a Hoffmann's two toed sloth during 2008. I'm not aware this species has been kept at Emmen and during my last visit 2012 they had the 'normal' two toed sloth ( Choloepus didactylus ).

There was a debate around that time which species Emmen kept, mainly because Zootierliste listed the sloths as Hoffmans. After some discussion everyone reached the conclusion that Emmen had, and always had, Linnaeus two toed sloth.

I've seen the animals at Emmen at the time, and I've seen Hoffman's at Skansen and in Costa Rica, and i'm pretty sure Emmen had the "normal" Linnaeus sloth.

4 small-clawed otter have been born at Emmen.

And 2 weeks ago, 4 lion-cubs were born. For the first time since the 1970's!

And other news, the move of the 4 elephants to osnabruck has been postponed, because two of them tested positive for tuberculosis. The animals have to be treated for this first, before they are moved.

It's a shame nobody has mentioned it, but they have to move because htoo kin aye and he new-born calf have passed away, june last year.
