Dierenpark Emmen (Closed) Emmen Zoo news

The current status is 12, and they are still expecting more. I wouldn't talk about a disappointing result, since they had too many seazons without any hatchlings growing up. And 12 is always better than nothing offcourse.
 
The hippopotamus indoor enclosure is not accessable at the moment due to one of the females pregnancy has reached the final stages. It is a little bit strange however, since I haven't heard of a new male arriving at emmen zoo. There are two males in the herd, but they have been 'helped', so it's quite impossible that one of them could be the father.
 
Kodiak bear mato has passed away recently. Caretakers found him lying dead in the indoor exhibit. Cause of death is still unknown.

3 small-clawed otters have been born, and 2 days ago a young giraffe was born. It's a male and had to be helped by the vetenarian, due to blocking of the birth canal. Elephant htoo kin aye can give birth any moment, and is actually already overtime since she was supposed to give birth in january.
 
The role of the small bear has indeed been portrayed by mato, but also by two other bears. They have also been residing in emmen, but I believe both have been sent to another zoo years ago.
 
Asian elephant Swe San Htay died yesterday. Cause of death not known yet. She was one of the elephants who came from Burma in 1988. She had two sons: Maung Htoo in 1998 and Unt Bwe in 2006.

that is so sad! she was one of my favourite elephants as all the emmen herd are, plus she was a very caring character I read.
I really was looking forward to see her new calf. :(:(

Makes me very sad.
 
I don't know if she was pregnant, I know htoo kin aye can deliver any moment now. And another one is scheduled for march, don't know if that was swe san thay. She had leg problems, but there was nothing to see from the outside of the body, and video-images taken during the night also showed nothing that could offer an explanation.
 
She was suffering from arthritis on both front legs. If that causes her death is unknown, maybe we will hear about it later.
 
I'm not a vetenarian, but it seems unlikely that arthritis is a cause of death, unless she could not stand on her legs anymore, and her organs got crushed. But that's also unlikely, because I don't believe an animal who can't get up anymore would keep quiet until she passes away. She would make a lot of noise, and the rest of the herd would panic at least. And according to the spokesman there was nothing special to see on the camaera's. I do think that panic would be considered 'special'.

It was stated on asianelephant.net that she was due to give birth in April. After her stillbirth did she seem ok? or did everything turn downhill for her? Perhaps a uterus prolaps like her former herd mate Khaing Lwin Htoo.
 
There were no problems at the birth of Unt Bwe nor were there afterwards. Except her frontlegs Swe San Htay seems healthy.
 
So she was the elephant scheduled for birth around march/april? That's sad, I was hoping for two calfs this year. Let's hope htoo kin aye's calf will be female, so there will be some positive news around the elephant herd.
 
Swe San Htay died as a result of a fall during the delivery of a baby. She broke her hip/pelvis, and couldn't stand up. Why she fell is not sure but her baby died with her. It was a male of 127 kilograms.

Very, very sad...
 
Also Yu Zin is going to move because lately she has been disturbing the herd quiet a lot after the death of Annabel.
A couple of months ago there was a rumour that yu Zin would move to Budapest. Budapest is going to start a breedinggroup with Assam as breedingbull. Maybe she can still go there?
 
My source at Emmen Zoo (an elephant keeper) told met a few months ago that she will not go to Budapest. He couldn't tell me to which zoo she will go.

But of course the plans could be changed...
 
oh this so sad, the herd is starting to fall apart after Annabel's death and now who knows who will be affected by Swe San Htay's. At 4 years old I'm sure that Unt Bwe will be ok.
Very unfortunate the Yu Zin has to leave. What kind of things has she been up to?

Does Yu Zin dislike Radza? I mean she has had 3 previous calves but all with Naing Thein.
 
Yu Zin is very dominant, and with Ma Palai having the same attitude it's better for Yu Zin to leave (not to Budapest, my source knows that for 99% for sure). If she dislike Radza? I don't know.

Emmen will have a sort of family group after Yu Zin has left. The two older females (Htoo Kin Aye and Htoo Yin Aye) are not related to each other but most of their daughters are; Mingalar Oo, Ma Palai and Ma Yay Yee have the same father: Naing Thein.

Shwe Zin is the only daughter (so far) of Radza in Emmen Zoo, and therefore he must leave the zoo at last in 2014. Because the zoo is moving to the new location at that time I think Radza will leave before the 'great move'.

I do hope though that the replacement bull is at least half as impressive as Radza.
