Dierenpark Emmen (Closed) Emmen Zoo news

Its been a few weeks now, does anyone know more details about Swe San Htay's death?
And how she fell during labour?

In other issues though:
A lot of the sites that mention Yu Zin state that she is one of the most respected elephants of the herd.
I know of from previous posts that she is very dominant and Ma palai is her main adversary.
Has she been actually been physically violent?
This is just out of curiosity.

I don't think we will ever find out why she fell. Perhaps because the labour of a 150 kilogram son exhausted her, and she simply couldn't keep standing on her feet, and was to tired to just lay down. Or perhaps her weak knees...

Yu Zin will move upcoming monday to woburn. According to the caretakers she creates a lot off stress in the herd, and ma palai gets the benefit of the doubt, simply because she and her mother form the centre of the family group, together with htoo kin aye and her female offspring.

One sunbittern, one marabu, one hummingbird and two pelicans have hatched in emmen recently. After the harsh winter, the inhabitants of the south american aviary can finally fly freely through their exhibit again, after being locked in their indoor enclosures for several months.

The elephant parade is now being held in emmen, the kick-off was at may 13th, at the zoo's 75th anniversary. This anniversary will be focussed on the elephant herd in emmen, and all festivities will be part of 'the elephantastic year'.

The impala herd is currently in their indoor enclosure, and contains at the moment 11 newborns. 3 more are underway.

Due to the harsh winter and some financial setbacks, zoo emmen has huge financial problems. The zoo has contacted the city counsil for financial support and has reequested an amount between 2 and 3 million euro's.

8 statues of the elephant parade have been heavily damaged in vandalist acts. As a consequence the parade could be prematurely halted, emmen would be the first city where this became a necessity, if this worst case scenario happens.

Two penguins have escaped their enclosure last week, an have been found in gardens at 500 metres from the park. Caretakers are still looking for the hole in the fence where they had to get through to escape from the exhibit.

I believe their departure has been scheduled for tomorrow ( 30th of august). There were two people walking around in zoo emmen today with the text 'www.zooplock.pl' on their back, so the logical concusion would be that they were polish caretakers who were here to assist with the move to plock.

It is all over the news that Emmen zoo is practically bankrupt.. The city did some research and concluded that they probably have to give the sac to employees and even close the doors in winter. There was a verry hars statement about the mismanagent in general. To much debt, to many budgetproblems etc etc.

What horrible news. I hope, that they can and will reopen that wonderful institution in spring again.

Are the number of visitors dropped down that much during the last few years?

Yes, the attendance has dropped severely in 2009 and 2010. As safariman already stated, there's quite a harsh statement about the mismanagement concucted by the management of the zoo. Because of their failed policy, these problems have risen. But, there are three options; to go on like they are doing now and probably build up a huge debt, until the zoo has moved to the new location. Option 2; to declare bankrupcy, and restart the whole zoo under a new legal construction. This would be bad for the zoo's image, and is very expensive. Option 3; to cut 30 % of the personell costs, and close in the winterperiod. Only if the latter is followed, it would be usefull when the city council helped the zoo out, financially. The council is willing to help, but still has to vote officially about the matter. So, these are exciting times, to say the least.....

The zoo will close down. The city council can not offer money for this not working institute. So I fear the sending away of all the animals, including the phants.

Wow!

Emmen Zoo is closing. Is this permanent or just for winter?

It seems the council is willing to offer money, and there are plans to turn the tide. So, there's no reason to fear the worst, until the zoo actually announces bankrupcy.

I first visited Emmen in 1994, and then again in 1995. At the time I was stunned by the place. It really did seem to be in a different league to so many European zoos, and its quality was extraordinary.

Returning in 2008, I was disappointed. Little on the 'old' site had changed, and there was a slight feeling of torpor hanging over the place. The new area, with penguins and one or two other things, seemed like an odd extension. The zoo didn't seem like a very wonderful place to visit: good, yes, but not as good as it once had been, and easily overtaken by a host of places in Holland, and over the border in Germany. I fear that zoos are no different t football teams, in that it is hard to stay at the top, all the time, and occasionally the fall is spectacular. And while Emmen is tumbling, other places are taking its place. It is very, very sad. But if Emmen can survive, it will find its day again, I am sure.

It's not as bad as people here seem to make out. Emmen Zoo is not closing and will also not be closing during the wintermonths. The elephant herd will remain to be shown at the new location. They attract too many tourist to the region for the Emmen city council not to help them.

Fact is however, that they are financially unhealthy, from 2008 onwards and the prospects for 2010 are not looking good as well. They really need to act, and act now in order to turn the park healthy again. Sofar there's a rapport from a survey-committee that says "things need to change", but there's no real plan or action taken since which in my opinion is rediculous. Something must be done, and also shown to the public (and more importantly, suppliers, state and bank)...

Wonder what they'll announce.
