A Hoffmann's two-toed sloth (Choloepus hoffmanni) was born last week. The zoo now has 1.2.1 sloths.
 
Is this species still kept in the small nocturnal section of the South American pavillon. This was the case on my first and only visit in 2002.
Hopefully the breeding of this species will continue...
 
Yes, they are kept in the nocturne of 'Americasa', together with two (1.1) night monkeys (Aotus lemurinus griseimembra), and a kinkaju, Potos flavus (I believe only one)

At my last visit (summer last year) they had a pair of kinkayou's, but they had acces to their off-exhibit pen and only came out for like 5 minutes (even though i spent considerable time in the nocturnal section "just" to see them).

I don't know if they get locked into the nocturnal section these days, or they still have acces to it during the day. A year ago they were still introducing them to the exhibit...

There's also some armadillo's on the ground there, a truly nice south-american night-exhibit :)
 
Next time I visit the nocturne I will look for both kinkayou's. Normally I'm to focused on the night monkeys, which are my favorites :D

Unfortunately the youngling has died. It was pushed of it's mothers belly by the father.
 
That's indeed bad news. Hopefully breeding will continue soon...

Today I noticed that ISIS lists Emmen's sloths as Choloepus didactylus, another mistake in the long line of those I've spotted so far.
 
Latin names are not my area, so i don't know which species is listed at ISIS. I do know that at the last birth of a slot in emmen ( 2001), emmen thought they had another species of sloths. After that birth they found out that they actually had hoffmann's sloths. Now they believe that there are many more hoffmann's sloths in zoo's worldwide than previously assumed, because of the mistaken identities.
 
Okay: there are only two species of the genus Choloepus, so the zoo apparently forgot to adjust its ISIS entry after the re-identification of their sloths.
 
Two ringtailemurs have been born, and two new servals have arrived from artis in amsterdam, after the two old servals died last year, at the ages of 20 and 21. Both new arrivals are male.
 
Any more news on them closing the old zoo and selling the land and just moving to the new site completely.

All recent news is mentioned in the topic about the new zoo. But if everything goes according to plan, they will start building in 2010, and the world of the tropics should open in 2013. The wold of dry heat and icy cold should follow in 2015.
 
The first marabou of the year has hatched in emmen. It's expected to be raised by it's parents. A second fertilized egg has been placed with a marabou couple who have eggs, but which are sadly unfertilized. The wait is now for this couple to accept the new egg as their own.
 
This afternoon at 16.00 hrs the Azian elephant Annabel fell in the moat. She's stuck lying on her left side. The keepers tried to free her from her position but in vain.

At 18.30 hrs they called in a crane to hoist her out.

The keepers are very worried about Annabel, with 42 years the oldest elephant in the zoo.

Annabel has now (20.00 hrs) been hoisted out of the moat and is being treated by the vetenarian.

In the raw news-footage of a news-show the spokesman told that she was quiet (which helps), but not too quiet.

They don't know for sure what happened as no one of the staff saw it, but according to visitors Annabel tripped and fell into the moat

She didn't make it, apparently the caretakers put her to sleep, because she couldn't get on her feet anymore. R.I.P. Annabel
