The only way to avoid male offspring is-stop breeding ! By the way-more important is-both calfs are healthy.
The most funny thing is, most elephant calfs made by A.I. are males .Lol.

During the last 2 weeks 3 Hamadryas baboons were born at Emmen
The oldest Giraffe in the Netherlands, Augusta, was put asleep today. Due to age-related problems she had lots of pain. She was almost 26 years old.
Earlier this month a newly born Giraffe died also through septicemia ( blood poisoning )

Have they changed the design of the exhibit,for the Alligators as the exhibit that I remember was very open plan?
No, not much. There was a small bay, this is gone now. They hove thrown rocks and sand in it, thus creating a small beach. This has the advantage that the alligators are easier to find and can't hide from the visitors view in the bay. The tropical fish are caught, and new cold-water species are added ( because the gators need to hibernate). That's it.
Some fans of the zoo in Emmen have created a special facebookpage on which people can see the building progress of the new zoo. It is in Dutch, but the pictures are speaking for themselves:

Do they have an expected completion date?
April 2016. They will close 3 months prior to that, to move the animals, and give them the oppurtunity to get used to ther new surroundings.
And the construction is still on schedule, fortunately.

How is the old zoo looking right now? Presumably, and understandably, the focus is on the new site; does this mean that the old site is starting to look a little sad and tatty? Or is the Emmen quality being maintained to the end?
Just pondering whether a 'farewell' visit should be planned for 2015, or whether the old Emmen Zoo is already dead and just a twitching carcass is left....

A few weeks ago a Spider monkey was born at Emmen Zoo
It's still a good zoo, but here and there it is in need of a bit of new paint. It's not extreme though..... There are some changes in the animal collection, as a preparation for the move.
Emmen Zoo recieved 2 Jaguars. At the moment they are off-display but already next week they will be visible for the public.

@Johnny, are jaguars part of the new collection plan for Wildlands?
I somehow suspect they might take up the room left vacant by the leopard.
