Endangered Ganges Dolphins were spotted in River Ganga

I had a few sightings of Susu (including one quite close up) in the middle of Varanasi in early 2002. I imagine they are all gone now.

Ah very cool! Did you ever photograph those animals?

No, to get a photo involves waiting till you saw one and then predicting where it will next pop up again and positioning and waiting with your camera and hoping for the best. I have a few of Amazon dolphins, but they are still quite common in certain parts of the Amazon (or at least were when I was there) and I had countless chances over the many weeks I was in the jungle.

But by just starring at the water at all times and wishing for a dolphin (and I actually thought it a long shot since the water is atrociously polluted in Varanasi) I did see the Ganges dolphins about three times over the course of about a week - and the last time was an excellent sighting being right in front of me on the ghats. They are easily the ugliest and scariest-looking cetacean I have ever seen.
