Equipment

Just wondering what kind of equipment everyone is using out there. I'm kind of new to all this. Inherited a Nikon D70s from my dad. I think I can use about 10 features on this thing, haha. But my main concern is lenses. Currently I'm using, I believe, a 200mm. Does anyone have any suggestions for other options. And also, just interested in what everyone else is shooting.

I use 60mm and 150mm macro lenses and a 300mm tele. Zoom lenses are more convenient because you don't have to change lens as often (or perhaps not at all); but I prefer prime lenses because they are easier to handle.

Olympus E-510 camera with Image Stabilised, 14-42, 40-150 & 70-300mm lenses (fourth-third system, they are equivalent approximately to the double for 35mm film system) FL-50 Olympus flash, tripod, filters...the 70-300mm zoom it´s fantastic for to photograph animals at zoo.

Canon EOS 40D DSLR with:

  • Canon 10-22mm EF-S f3.5-4.5 USM
  • Canon 24-105 EF f/4L IS USM
  • Canon 70-300mm EF f4-5.6 IS USM

I shoot exclusively in RAW mode and use Adobe Photoshop Lightroom to organise and touch up my photos.

Also have a Canon A650 compact digital camera which is great as a backup for when you don't want to change lenses - and for taking photos of signs and display boards.

I'm looking to get the Canon 100-400mm EF f/4.5-5.6L IS USM ... I decided against it originally because of the weight (1.4kg!) and cost, but it has come down a lot in price recently, and I think it will be very useful for wildlife photography (especially birds), which I am starting to do a lot more of these days.

Canon & Mac geek

I seem to be slightly addicted to spending money when it comes to camera kit!
I've got a Canon 350d & 400d... with being female i find the 40d is just too big and heavy for me. I have more lenses than i should, and naturally have a wish list!

I have got:
Canon 24-70mm f2.8 L USM Lens
Canon 50mm f1.8 ii Lens
Canon 100mm f2.8 USM Macro Lens + Hood
Canon 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS USM Lens
Canon 70-200mm f4 L USM Lens
Canon Speedlite 580 ii Flash

But i would also like...
Ultra wide angle 10-20mm, a telephoto prime (to see how much sharper they can be) and a canon G10 for when i cant be bothered with a big bag!

Im a mac user, and do all my digital darkroom in iPhoto & photoshop cs3

sim... u might want to see what Kerso is charging on ebay for the 100-400, or martins camera shop. I have used both for canon L glass and got great prices!

I'm a Sony alpha guy, as I had the minolta maxxum film cameras and didn't want to invest in new glass. I like the Sony range as they are compatible with all of the AF lenses from minolta from 1984 onwards and the stabilisation is in the camera. Minolta lenses used to be really cheap second hand but since Sony have brought out several DSLR models the prices have rocketed. I tend to use the following lenses for my zoo photography:

Sigma 10-20 mm F4-5.6 for crowd shots, panoramas and inside buildings where its impossible to stand back to fit everything in.

Sigma 17-70 mm f2.8 my everyday lens

Minolta 50mm f1.7 for close up animal portraits. Minolta 100mm f2.8 macro for insect photography.

Minolta 70-200mm f4 beercan for those critters at the back of the exhibit

Sigma 170-500mm f5-6.3 for when I have a tripod and really want those elusive beasts (admittedly my favourite lens).

A 2x teleconvertor has saved my skin before too. The other lenses I own tend to stay at home

I am dreaming of the new 70-200mm f2.8 from Sigma, but at $1200 I'll be dreaming a long time

a lot of the photographs on my local zoos website are mine:

IMO the equipment you are using is good, but i would recommend getting a zoom lens with reach up to 400. I'm not sure what lenses Nikon make though

  • Canon 24-105 EF f/4L IS USM
  • Canon 100-400mm EF f/4.5-5.6L IS USM
