It's not an overgrown seagull, it's a Gooney Bird.

Are yellow mongooses rarely seen in the states? in the UK they're almost as common as meerkats!

That's a relatively recent (and pleasing) occurrence - I well remember peering through into the quarantine area at Cotswold on several visits in order to see what were for many years the UK's only Yellow Mongooses.

That's a tiny bit of an exaggeration, of course :p according to ZTL, there are 21 UK collections which hold Yellow Mongoose, whilst there are 96 UK collections which hold Meerkat. That said, I suspect the Dwarf Mongoose (at 16 UK collections) will soon overtake the Yellow, as this taxon seems to breed a lot more readily and profusely than it's larger cousin.
 
Perth and Healesville Sanctuary :) the former has held them pretty constantly, the latter on-and-off.

there are something like 30 ZAA collections with quolls, and I don't know how many non-ZAA collections (that would be harder to check and I can't be bothered searching tbrough all their websites....). Seems like quite a lot to me also.
