Just south of Lisboa is a zoo in Montemor o Velho called Europaradise.
There had been talk of it shutting down, but it seems it was open in 2012 ... Anyone been to visit?

North of Lisbon? :)
Single-wattled cassowary look interesting but unfortunately it's a bit too rural for me to visit when I'm in Portugal next week.

Portugal next week and Czech Republic last month! I am so jealous !

Sure on both (before they seemed to have both single and double-wattled ...) and the giraffes ... their FB site suggested merely ..., but I be damned to find anything more concrete than just that piece of news. No physical evidence, photographic material on the net or news ...

Coimbra is the nearest big town.
 
maybe I’m a tad late on this haha but just if you were curious:

the giraffes never did come to europaradise, because the Portuguese zoo committee did not allow them to (even though they were talking about getting them for years)

and yes they still do have cassowary!

a few years ago there was a nasty fire that burned down quite a bit of areas in the zoo, especially considering quite a few exhibits are made of wood, but luckily they have rebuilt most of their exhibits

The zoo has two tigers, one male and one female. The zoo cannot breed them because the exhibit is not big enough (legally) for three tigers

I went last summer so I’m not sure how much has changed and progressed since then
