thank you very much. can't believe that Aye chan May is already pregnant again!
very nice to hear another emmen baby is on the way,

..... still very unfortunate about Swe San Htay :(

Interesting to hear there's one at Whipsnade with a calf due in April... wonder if she can pop it out before I go on the 7th. :)

Karishma is the young female from Twycross who was sent to Whipsnade because she was 'difficult' at Twycross.

You may not be able to see ALL Whipsnade's elephants as the females cannot all be kept together and they rotate them. There is a field behind the bull's barn/sand paddock where the ones not in the main enclosure go- you can sometimes just see them through the hedge.

As far as I know, Emmen is not doing pregnancy tests. So any pregnancies from Htoo Yin Aye or Ma Palai are unconfirmed, too.

The Cologne zoo has not published anything about Aye Shan May being pregnant again and I find it hard to believe that she is pregnant again. What is your source?

@ dragonelenerd: You should have learned by now that just because something is claimed as fact in the internet, it is not necessarily true!!

Delhi is certainly not pregnant. AI was not successfull.

Thank you, than I can remove her from the list. Do you know if they will try it again or can't she get pregnant again. She is 26 I think and hasn't had a successful pregnancy nor she has ever been naturally inseminated.

@ Yassa: my source on emmen is a person who visits the zoo somewhat every week. There is a pregnant elephant but he doesn't know wich one, the only two who can be recognizable pregnant are Ma Palai (she hasn't had a baby so far) and Htoo Yin Aye she had a baby in march 2008.

Re Woburn: if you read the report by the mammal curator correctly from the Emmen cow having come in, the other 2 young cows would not be pregnant at all ....

Be interested to see the source for the report that both these cows are already pregnant ...??? If it is not definite, than do not speculate .... please.

The two woburn cows don't stand on the list as pregnant but as possibly pregnant. I haven't read the report but now that you mentioned that it told that both cows aren't pregnant I can remove them from the list.
That is where a forum is good fore. So people can share information.

They say that they hope this new female will promote breeding/interest from the bull at Woburn- the inference is he's not doing anything with the existing females. I think this trio are too familiar with each other.:(

Now that Paris Vincennes is closed, where did their elephants go?

The last elephants of Vincennes moved out in 2005. That were Kaveri and her daughter Nina. They went to Dompierre zoo. Kaveri's son Thisiam is now in Katowice zoo,Poland. The zoo is trying to get a female from somewhere( I don't know, maybe Asia?) to breed with him.
Those three were the only elephants Vincennes zoo had at the end.

Whipsnade's latest calf was born yesterday (Sunday 11th). Not the greatest music in the source but there ya go.

Great news! What sex is the calf? Obviously the mother has taken to it, which is great. Any signs of EEHV? I hope not. I don't know if they can treat this with anti-virals straight away knowing that it is present in the herd? Anyway, excellent news all round that they've had another successful birth!! I'm really pleased for the whole ele team at Whipsnade.

I have a double feeling about this. At the one side it's great that there is anohter calf. But on the other side I can't agree with the elephant holding of whipsnade and the trics that this youngster is going to have to do.
The same for Hannover. Though I don't know if both zoo's do exactly the same shows?

Some other news, the male asian elephant Sony of Brijnu zoo in Croatia passed away at an age of 39.

Whipsnade's Elephants are certainly not trained to do tricks or shows for the public. They are taught various behaviours, mostly for enrichment and training and there has been some discussion on here of training methods/style. But to my knowledge(?) there is no public display apart from the long walks(some of) the group- but not this female Karishma- do around the grounds on a daily basis. (?) Someone correct me if I am wrong on this though.

My 'double feeling' on seeing this video is a different one- that its a pity Karishma's halfsister(same age) did not leave Twycross and go to Whipsnade with her, as she could have had a calf by now as well.

AFAIK this calf is a male.

From May half-term to September there is a training demonstration called 'Elephantastic' in the arena adjacent to the elephant paddock. The guidebook's description says 'If you've ever wanted to test the strength of an elephant's trunk or find out how keepers train these awe-inspiring animals to lift their feet for health checks, make your way to our purpose-built Elephantastic arena - situated to the right of the exhibit car park.'
