European elephants 2010

African elephant cow "Sabah" (born 1986) died at Tierpark Berlin. "Pori" caused her severe injuries.

Pori is born 1981. Her last calf Kando was born three years ago. So why shouldn't she gets pregnant again?

Cinta at Rostov Zoo in Russia gave birth to a female calf on the 22th of December. Cinta herself is only 5 and a half years old. Father of the calf is most likely Cintas own father Ankhor at Berlin Tierpark.

I also think that 3 is a very young age for an elephant to get pregnant. I wonder if this would happen in the wild. However, female elephants in captivity seem generally to become fetile at a young age. For example Chandra at Zurich Zoo started to be fertile at the age of 4 and that is why the bull Maxi had to be separated from the herd. Also Farina and Califa at Hannover Zoo conceived their calves quite early (at the age of 5).

With the resent births of five calfs at Hannover zoo within one year (a first for a zoo I think) would someone know what sex they are?

The calfs at Hannover are three males and two females. The males are called Nuka, Felix and Dinkar. One female is called Saphira and one female is still without name. There is also Shanti, a two year old male. I wonder where they will find future breeding places for all those bulls!

Glad they at least got two females from the five births, thats a good question about the males

wow 3 years old! absurdley...young. I hope Cinta is alright after the birth,
