European elephants 2011

Vishesh in Ostrava has given birth to a male calf (78kg) today morning. It was separated by the keepers due to aggresion of mother and other cow, but has been reunited with the mother later. The calf is healthy but is yet to drink.

Elephants of the United Kingdom

"According to the Elephant.se, the largest online database of elephants in the world, the United Kingdom is home to 71 elephants, 15 of which are males. One individual travels with a circus, while another is a sacred temple elephant. The remaining animals are housed in zoos and safari parks across the country..."

Cinta at Rostov Zoo in Russia gave birth to a female calf on the 22th of December. Cinta herself is only 5 and a half years old. Father of the calf is most likely Cintas own father Ankhor at Berlin Tierpark.

What is to prevent Cinta to become pregnant again with a related bull? I'm still not sure why she was sent to the same zoo as Horas and Yoma.

Because neither the director of the Animal Park Berlin nor the Rostov Zoo care about modern elephant management or prevent inbreeding. Taking all 3 was the only chance the Rostov Zoo had to get elephants, so they took the 3 siblings. If Cinta breeds with her brother, they`ll be delighted about a new calf. Period.

Thats sad, but at least Hella isn't there by herself.

- In an update, the new calf is another male and has been named Rajendra.
With Sang Raja now a proven father, hopefully this marks a baby boom for the cows of Colonge.

Female elephant Rupa will leave Burgers' Zoo Arnhem for a zoo in Bergamo, Italy. Ever since Rupa came from Riga she can't seem to get along with the resident female Pinky despite several attempts to get them to live together. Female Rekka is being swapped between either to keep them company, and the paddock is seperated.

According to the source (someone on the local radio) she will be joined in Bergamo with a female from her age from "Marseille" (La Barben is closest?).

It was mentioned on this site last month that Rupa would be moved to the zoo in Bergamo, Italy. Does anyone have any information about this zoo? Do they currently have elephants?

P.F. Le Cornelle exhibits - to the best of my knowledge - 1 African elephant (29) at the moment.

Thank you very much. If this is the case, it is very interesting the EEP would approve (if they did) a move that would put the different species together in the same exhibit. It seems they, along with the SSP, advise to discontinue these African/Asian elephant mixed exhibits. There are very few left in America; I do not know about Europe.
