writhed hornybills idea

Would it be possible to have databases of each species ; eg elephant , rhinos , hornbills .... whatever but on a seperate page ( not just another thread )
similar to the Gallery ..... We could have it as the "animal reference centre "

They would be extremely useful- but a lot of hard work for the compilers...

Yes, protein rich diets play a part in the earlier onset of sexual maturity and oestrus.

What I was hinting at was that there must be a limit between what is the lowest age at which these species first bear young naturally- and an even earlier age (as above- induced by protein rich feeding) at which they may (accidentally) be capable of breeding in captivity.

Of course I don't regard 8 years as too young for an elephant....

I think that would be cool and I will contritube as best I can should such a project ever be realised. It would be like our own private ISIS :p

Yes, please do such database! :)

BTW, I am curious how many zoos recently imported young Africans? It seems that within 5 years there willl be elephant "baby boom" in Europe!

I will set up a separate thread on African elephants soon. Much to talk about there too! :D

When I go to Leipzig this summer, I am SO going to see that! Fortunately the elephant underwater viewing is placed right opposite the pangolin enclosure, so I guess I will just camp there :p

Amazing isn't it, can you imagine that lasting experience for those visitors when that lovely ele comes right upto the glass, that is why we bang on so much for all our zoos for moments like that, that leave a mark on you forever!

Wow!

That is simply incredible... to think I was amazed at a polar bear coming face-to-face with me at seaworld ;)

this must be an "incidental" bathing elefant.

the leipzig herd has a scheduled bathing time. it's very cool to see, but picture opportunity lasts for only seconds. the water gets murky reeeeeaaaaally fast!!!

nonetheless it's a breathtaking sight. construction itself must also have been incredible. I've seen an elefant literally push off from the glass wall. imagine the pressure on that thing!

Is that because there is dung in the water(like Hippos) or do they stir up mud from the bottom. If the pool was completely concreted with no soil contact, the water would perhaps stay clearer. Its a terrific idea but maybe it needs slight remodelling?

The bathing usually takes place at 10 am - the elephants are not forced to go into the water, but at that time, the keepers remove the hotwire gate and shower the eles with a hose, which is usally enough to encourage some of the herd to go into the pool. It`s the indoor pool which has that underwater window and the mud which is stirred up within 10 seconds after the first ele goes in comes from the floor in the indoor paddock, hzalf of which is covered by a thick sand layer (like in Chester).

Elephant Nikolai is moving on April 1st from Artis Zoo in Amsterdam to Hannover Zoo. After staying a while he´s going to the zoo of Munster. Does anyone know what happens with Calvin and Charmundi than?

Thats's amazing, if not quite surreal :-S
Wonder how thick that glass is...

As far as I know, Nicolai stays in Hannover, Calvin comes to Münster. Charmundi (aka Magnum) is headed for Boedapest.

And by the way, I´m at the 31. march in Leipzig :p I try to get some underwater-ele-pics :)

When are Calvin and Magnum leaving. Why is Magnam heading for Boedapest? There are only 2 cows living there and they're old. In Boedapest isn't a lot space. I've been there in February 2008. Very poor conditions

Dunno why, got it from the german forum. Actually there are many rumors. After April 1. we´ll know more ;)
