I reckon this one has quite a lot of scope for discussion and debate - hopefully with a resulting upwards boost in interest and participation? The category is CARNIVORES - enjoy!

I think the overall quality of the species lists is better Chester than Wroclaw.

The latter has excellent enclosures for European species,

European wildcat:

But I certainly wasn't impressed with those for snow leopards, tigers and clouded leopards. Nothing really bad, but not really good either.

The one for the lions is new and is excellent, but the waw factor is with the building rather than the outside enclosure.

Perhaps the best enclosure is that for the Cape fur seals at the Afrykarium:

I’m not the biggest fan of Chester but I’m struggling to think of any zoo I know of with a higher standard of carnivore exhibitry. The indoor Jaguar enclosure alone would be the biggest I’ve seen, not to mention the huge, hillside outdoor area with excellent landscaping and a waterfall. The Spectacled Bear enclosure is great, as is the Giant Otter enclosure that was originally for sea lions. I liked the Sumatran Tiger and Sun Bear enclosures in Islands, as well as the Asiatic Lion paddocks which struck me as quite well-themed without coming across as too much. Not sure if this is permanent, but on my visit, half of the Jaguar House was for Bush Dogs, by far the biggest enclosure I’ve seen for the species, and Red Pandas had one of the enormous orangutan ‘aviaries’ in RotRA which wrapped around onto the roof of the barn. Solid Cheetah, African Hunting Dog, Meerkat and Dwarf Mongoose enclosures, too, plus ASCO mixed in one of the orangutan islands Bat-eared Foxes in the new African complex. To top it off, there is a good offshow breeding programme for Scottish Wildcats.

I think the excellent Brown Bear enclosure at Wroclaw, the depth of that fur seal pool compared to the unfortunate lack of any pinnipeds at Chester, and the comparable breadth of the onshow collections is easily enough to salvage two points here, but nothing more. 3-2 Chester seems like a good starting vote in my eyes.

Chester's official website lists the following Carnivores on exhibit...

  • African Wild Dog
  • Andean Bear
  • Asiatic Lion
  • Asian Short-Clawed Otter
  • Sumatran Tiger
  • Snow Leopard
  • Fossa
  • Jaguar
  • Red Panda
  • Meerkat
  • Sun Bear
  • Bush Dog
  • Giant Otter
  • Dwarf Mongoose
  • Palawan Binturong
  • Bat-Eared Fox
This collection alone is really strong as is, but the exhibits they're held in are also really good quality, and I think the best way to demonstrate this is through looking at Chester's other wins during this tea-cup, since everything that scored them the wins in their respective sections definitely applies to the carnivores.

South America? Applies to the jaguar, Andean bear and giant otter
Islands? Applies to the tiger, sun bear and binturong
Tropical Forests? Just combine the above two lists I mentioned!

If I actually knew how to post pictures here, I would, but with a visit to Chester from last year still fresh in my memory, I cannot praise it enough, carnivores included.

It is quite simple : go to your device, click on a picture to copy and paste it here. You can paste 10 pictures in a single post.

You can also upload pictures in the Chester gallery : go to media, chester and click on 'upload pictures', select 'chester zoo' and select one or more of your own pictures.

OK, thanks.

Chester has 15 carnivores not found in Wroclaw and gets 26 points for carnivores found in up to 10 European collections, giving a total of 41

I'll score this 3-2 to Chester

A much quieter match than I expected, to be honest!

Chester - 57/95 points - 60.000%
Wroclaw - 38/95 points - 40.000%
