Thus far, neither of the collections in this match have had a particularly successful Cup - one has a single success to three losses, whilst the other has only two losses to its name.

However, the category of TEMPERATE FOREST AND WOODLAND will grant one of them a much-desired success.... but which one?

Doesn't feel like a fantastic category for either collection, but I think a tentative 3/2 vote for Artis might be the best starting point pending arguments for either side?

I really need to search my memories to make a decision here. I don't remember any remarcable works at any of the zoos in this category. I will choose Basel initially for their Wild Boar, Mouflon and Owl area. 3:2

I have visited both zoos, Artis regularly. I also find it hard to see what falls within this category for both zoos. I can't think of many species or exhibits. For Artis, only the Red Panda enclosure, although originally beautifully modernistic, and the wolf habitat come to mind, which I personally find just okay, although somewhat small. However, I no longer think the Red Panda enclosure is really suitable for its inhabitants—it’s quite outdated, and I’m looking forward to the new enclosure being completed sometime this year.

For Basel, of course, there are Wild Boar, Mouflon, an Owl area, and some exhibits in the Virarium i guess. The exceptional Hellbender habitat is one spectacular exhibit of a very interesting species that I think falls within this category. But im not sure. So, due to the lack of anything really noteworthy or good at Artis, I can't rate it very highly. I have to give the big victory to Basel. But if I'm missing something, please correct me."

The mouflons are domestics, so I wouldn't count them and the owl area is a home for kea since a few years, so also uncountable. The only owls on display in Basel are little owls, which are more of an open country species...

So that really leaves very little for Basel. Wild boar, possibly the western gray kangaroo & brush turkey in Australis depending on how you define temperate woodland and then the hellbenders & crocodile lizards...

Artis also doesn't have a lot to offer: red panda, raccoon, striped skunk, red-necked wallaby, Siberian weasel & wolves, as well as a few pheasants, pigeons and crocodile lizards & newts.

Basel offers even less, but has the excellent hellbender display, whereas Artis' strongest one here is the fine Siberian weasel exhibit (an ugly cage from a distance, but a perfectly fine place for the weasels). Overall I will be going 3-2 Artis but it is almost a coin toss.

Thanks for clarifying, @lintworm . I completely forgot about the various beautiful bird exhibits at Artis.

On that note, does the (architecturally) beautiful crane enclosure count for this category, or are cranes too much of a wetland species?

I voted first to a 3-2 to Basel, but after @lintworm post I had to re-think it. Not counting the mouflon and owl exhibits is a loss to Basel, but both the brush turkey and hellbenders are quite a rarity in Europe, so that compesates the loss. Good enclusore for wild boars and grey kangaroos are also a plus. All this gives 2 points to Basel. As for Artis, the weasels are fairly rare, and that also counts for the common hoopoe, they aren't as rare as the rare species at Basel, but they aren't that common, so that's a point. A much bigger collection gives it another point, and the exhibits aren't that bad, most are average or a bit tight on space, but no exhibit realy stands out, so that's an additional point. So that's 3-2 to Artis, but if someone makes a good argument for Basel then I might change my vote. I'm really undecided with this match!

To be honest, I think that cranes fit the category *far* better than the hellbenders do :D
Oh, sorry for any confusion I've made by including the hellbenders! I think that including the cranes just reinforces my vote to Artis, so that's still a 3-2 to Artis for me.

Seems like that Artis is more worthy of the 3 points, but I have no recollection of the Siberian weasel. Where exactly is the exhibit ?

Any further thoughts or votes? I'd be interested to hear arguments from the four pro-Basel voters - @pipaluk , @Brum , @Jogy and @Mathijs - too, and discover whether they can incite a late-match flurry of votes for the Swiss collection!

The slowest match to date, with a disappointing lack of participation - but it ended with a much-desired win for Artis :)

Basel - 37/85 points - 43.529%
Artis - 48/85 points - 56.471%

As yet, it is unclear whether either collection will proceed beyond this stage - but time will tell....
