This time round, we shall take a look at a pair of much-loved German collections which have each already gone through two matches apiece - and the category is one which I feel will spark much debate: BIRDS.

I hope that my suspicions will be borne out, and that the coming three days herald a hard-fought discussion on both sides.....

I feel this is a match which would have been a lot closer even six or seven years ago, but which now represents a fairly easy win for Zoo Berlin as a result of the *significant* decline of the bird house and associated exhibits at Zoo Frankfurt, alongside the large number of very good category exhibits which still exist at Zoo Berlin.

As such, a solid 4:1 vote for Berlin, with the single dissenting point almost solely being earned by the work Zoo Frankfurt has undertaken in breeding Northern Brown Kiwi and helping to keep the species established in European collections.

Even 10 years ago this would have been an easy win for Berlin. These are 2 zoos with a very similar approach to displaying birds, but Berlin just has 3-4 times the number of species. The relative decline of the Frankfurt bird house doesn't help, but that house wasn't a real strength to start with.

The good part for birds in Frankfurt is mainly the kiwi breeding and a rather excellent Humboldt's penguin enclosure.

Apart from the shorebird aviary in Berlin I don't think there are many great exhibits there either, but there is a solid mass of average-good aviaries, so an easy win.

Whenever I tell people about Berlin Zoo, I always, without fail, point out their bird house. Maybe the enclosures are a little more old-school, but in terms of quantity, it's just amazing. Plus, the theming of each of the four "quarters" being for a separate continent is a nice touch. The walkthrough section in the middle is alright, I've seen flashier before, but I really did enjoy their kiwi exhibit.

The new eagle aviaries were being built when I last went, so I don't have an opinion on that.

Per the Cup rules, I require a post from @Leaf Productions discussing why he has given a 5:0 vote to Berlin, and sufficient justification must be presented for his vote to stand.

Alternatively, he should alter his vote.

Berlin Zoo easily wins this category. The new-ish Bird House, with its 35+ aviaries plus two walk-through sections, is terrific for bird nerds. Then there's the Shorebird Aviary with Inca Terns flying over the heads of visitors and a wave machine in the water. Berlin also has the Pheasantry, all those flamingo species, the excellent Eagle Canyon (renovated from 2015 to 2018), Penguin World, etc.

In comparison, Frankfurt Zoo has its historic Bird House that had 40 species when I was there in 2019, but the glass enclosures look like reptile terrariums from afar and seem outdated for birds. Outside the building is the series of 'Biotope Aviaries', but this whole area might appear different since my visit. The penguin complex looks nice.

4-1 Berlin Zoo is my vote.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot that Berlin had nearly every single species of flamingo, including one of only two collections to have Andean, and THE only place to see Puna.

Still awaiting any indication from @Leaf Productions that he intends to follow Cup rules by either posting sufficient explanation for his 5:0 vote or amending said vote.

It will be discounted if nothing changes in the next 24 hours or so.
