This one should be an interesting match - it is all-but-certain that Stuttgart will progress to the next round and Plzen will falter, but the latter still has one final opportunity to prove itself and go out of the Cup with head held high.

The category at hand is WATER, one which I feel is well-suited to both competitors - but which one will the tides of discussion and debate favour?

Although this is definitely a category where both collections are reasonably strong, I think there's a good case for Stuttgart having the (slight) advantage - the aquarium is rather good, and there are several category-relevant exhibits elsewhere in the zoo including several aviaries containing waterbirds, a very nice beaver exhibit, a collection of native-species open air terraria containing ponds for a variety of amphibians and reptiles, to name but a few.

To start with, and pending discussion, a 3:2 vote for Stuttgart seems best.

I had the same feeling and therefore it's quite quiet here.

I'm a huge fan of Plzen fish ark aquarium with endangered freshwater species from all around the world and the Czech river section is also quite good. Regarding the high number of countable birds there is the same problem which many of Plzens aviaries struggle with. They are often overcrowded. (Though some are at least ok). I also like the crocodile tank at the tropical greenhouse.

Stuttgart on the other side has an aquarium with uncountable amount of fish species which lacks a large, outstanding tank. However the landscape aquariums are a prime example of how to make simple tanks stunning. The crocodile hall with the two Australian crocodile species is also pretty nice looking. They also have a nice (but not as large as Plzen) collection of birds. Probably a difference maker within these two zoos are the Californian sea lions, as Plzen is lacking Pinnipeds completely.

I think i will go with 3:2 for Stuttgart right now, but closer to 4:1 than a win for Plzen.

Having never visited either collection, I do find myself leaning a little bit more towards Plzen here, which is where I have placed my vote for the time being, but I do feel as though I am somewhat lacking some information.

The design of the Czech River exhibit fascinates me and it is definitely a bucket list exhibit for me. I can't find too much information about it though - is it just for otters and fish, or are there reptiles and waterfowl too? Either way, a big asset for Plzen here, I feel, and it inspires me in a way that the Stuttgart aquarium does not. Speaking from experience, with aquariums such as Antwerp or the former one at London that are from what I can tell similar to Stuttgart, the long series of somewhat repetitive tanks tend to get boring. The law of diminishing returns ensures that by the time I have finished the aquarium I feel indifferent to most of the fish, and I strongly suspect that should I ever visit it myself the same could well apply to Stuttgart. Some of the tanks in the gallery also strike me as a little cramped and sparse, more so than the Plzen ones. So while I love the large paludariums, overall, I don't feel particularly inspired by the exhibit, nor enthused to see it in person. The contrary is true for Plzen.

I also really like the look of AkvaTera, although it is hard to tell as few of its exhibits are pictured online. Plzen also seems to have a rather extensive waterfowl collection, and whilst I have heard past criticisms about the quality of the aviaries (the depth of the pools for diving ducks in particular), some other aviaries look rather good, and Stuttgart has issues of its own in this category with several pinioned waterfowl; one of which, the Northern Gannet, is living in what is quite possibly the ugliest waterfowl enclosure that I have ever seen. I also really like the way that Plzen seems to integrate fish into other displays, such as the Mediterraneum or 'Underground World.' The latter, much like the Czech River exhibit and several of the aviaries throughout the zoo ground, excite me and make me want to go out of my way to ensure a visit in a way which Stuttgart's offerings here certainly don't.

I understand that many of the reasons above, especially those regarding Stuttgart's aquarium, may come across as quite subjective and opinionated, especially given my rather limited experience having not seen them in person. But as I mentioned at the start of the Cup, my logic for voting in such contests where I haven't visited either is to ask myself which collection I would rather visit for the category? And Plzen is easily ahead of Stuttgart in that regard.

Would be happily proven wrong in any of the above points by someone with first-hand experience of either collection, but there is my current stance on things.

Minor point, Suttgart doesn't hold anymore gannets. I don't know if any other waterfowl has occupied the exhibit. Maybe a local can clear that out.:)

@Kalaw if i remember correctly, the Czech river only has otters and fish.

While i understand the critic on that point, but the example isn't correct. From what i know the Gannets never were pinioned.

A relatively close match, which crept closer and closer to a tie as things progressed.... one wonders if the tide might have turned in favour of Plzen with another day or so?

Stuttgart - 59/115 points - 51.304%
Plzen - 56/115 points - 48.696%

One collection progresses, the other ends the Cup here - but I reckon both can be proud of their record in this match.
