I appreciate where you're coming from, but I disagree.

The elephant house is rather attractive, as is the old elephant house in its new guise as a Baird's tapir house. The two new penguin exhibits are good. The ape house, now that is has outdoor 'gardens', is really pretty good. And some of the older buildings have real character: the zebra stable, the bear enclosure (recently improved). Only the polar bear pit is truly horrible.

I'd disagree on Stuttgart, though. There is a zoo with a surfeit of concrete,
without much charm, and with a relatively run-of-the-mill collection. Nice shop, though!

@Sooty Mangabey the "oo with a surfeit of concrete, without much charm, and with a relatively run-of-the-mill collection" is Munster;) I heard from quite a lot of people that they really liked Stuttgart and with kaka, dorcas gazelle and some more, tghe collection isn't that bad.

About Wuppertal, I didn't really like the elephant house, there's is a concrete floor... Outside it looks oke. The Tapir enclosure has style, but outdoors it doesn't even look like a rainforest... At the apehouse, the 2 chimpanzees and 8 bonobo's still only have an inside enclosure, so call it good because 2 species have a nice garden?

If you come from overseas, these are in my opinion Europe's must sees:
Holland: Burgers' Zoo and Rotterdam (runner's up: Gaia Park, Artis Rotterdam)
Germany: Leipzig, Berlin zoo, Berlin Tierpark, Cologne, Frankfurt, Wuppertal, Duisburg, Walsrode (runners's up: Hellabrun Munich, Stuttgart's Wilhelma, Dortmund)
Belgium: Antwerp (Planckendael)
France: Jardin des plantes (Beauval, parc des felines)
Switserland: Zurich and Basle
Tsjechie: Prague, Dvur Kralove (Plzen)
Hungary: Budapest
Austria: Vienna (Schmiding)
Great Brittain: Chester (Marwell, London, Port Lympe, Howlett's)
This is the best mix of collection, historical buildings, modern enclosures and gardens.

Hi,
Thanks for sharing such a great information regarding the best over there.. I have a doubt which I want to share with you all.. I am visiting Europe with my family next year and my daughter is around 4 years old.. I was wondering to know which zoo over there will be suitable for her? She is quite naughty and I don't want any kind of trouble.. Please help!

Hi flylink

I don't know exactly what you mean with "quite naughty". With real naughty kids you will have trouble (with parents of other kids) in any zoo in the world...
If you just mean, that your daughter is always running and moving, then here are my suggestions:
1. Zoo Rhenen in the Netherlands (many indoor and outdoor playing and climbing areas for kids).
2. Zoo Zurich in Switzerland (good playing and climbing area close to Masoala Rainforest Dome)
3. Erlebniszoo Hannover in Germany (Big and different play area plus many extras not only for Kids all around the zoo like a boat ride thru "Africa")

There will be also good "Kid-Zoos" in Great Britain, Eastern European Countries, Scandinavian Countries (but unfortunately the most I have never visited) and France (where I can't remember, in which ones there is an extraordinary playground).
