Toronto Zoo Exhibits!!

I'm bored so just wanted to put up a post about what enclosure at the Toronto Zoo should be redone, comment which one, why, and what should be put in the new enclosure.

The ones I'd like to see given a renovation, on the top of my head:

The whole Indomalaysian pavilion; it's not just the Orangs I'd like to be given a bigger, better enclosure :) I know that the Orang exhibit is scheduled to be redone in 2013 but I'm not sure about the rest of the pavilion.

On the same subject, all the entire outdoor Indo exhibits, I'd like to see a face lift given to those. Particularly the tapir exhibit.

I would like to see a facelift given to the giraffe yard (it's planned that they're getting a new house). The hyena exhibit could also do with a freshening up/expansion.

I Agree. One thing I don't really enjoy is the Meerkat exhibit that is indoor. It's too compact and last time I check it was cluttered with cages and looked very cramped. I would improve the indoor exhibit with more space and where visitors can notice the exhibit. Outdoor exhibit would have a large hill, with a small moat and fake foliage and rocks. The backdrop of the exhibit would be of artificial savannah rocks. =)

Although it's a huge improvement over the old meerkat exhibit, your idea would be really, really nice! I think the crates are in the enclosure to acclimatize them to them for transportation (to the vet or if they're going to another zoo).

They should then make ports between the outdoor and indoor exhibits. With the fake savannah stone walls indoor and outdoor. And what they did at the San Diego Zoo is use the fake stone walls and make the ports also stone-like, making it look more naturalistic.

Another exhibit I would love to see redone is the Red Panda exhibit. It's one of my favourite animals, but it's really difficult seeing these animals. I think the shape of the exhibit is fine, take the idea of fake stone wall as the backdrop and have mist slithering down the stones with little ports throughout the exhibit for the pandas to come out. The majority of the exhibit are hills and rocks that act as ports for the animals. I would probably make it identical to the Red Panda exhibit at the National Zoo. It's really well done at the zoo and put ferns and a stream.

The zoo should also fix the decor of the zoo, such as adding newer plants and trees and the front gate should be redone into something modern. Perhaps flags or big signs. I don't like the wooden entrance @_@ IMO.

No, giant panda's are still on the rocks as there difficult to acquire. If they are added, it won't be for another 5 to 10 years :(

Lets see, The african elephant exhibit is a must to be fixed up. Im invisioning a 8-9 acre outdoor exhibit with a large pool, rolling hills and several different paddocks. They should also theme it to complement the African Savanna currently in place.

The giraffe exhibit is another one i'd love to see replenished. Maybe a 2 acre exhibit so the zoo could have a large herd. A feeding deck would be nice atleast

The siberian tigers need a bit of work. There exhibit is a bit too bare and the maternity yar is far to small. Maybe they could just expand the second yard a bit, make the first exhibit a deep forest theme and then install a large glass windoow for better viewing

Awwww, that sucks :( I really wanted pandas. And I think Quartz said something about re-doing the hippo and elephant exhibits.

The elephant exhibit was supposed to start construction this year

That would really be great, the Tundra Trek and the New Elephant exhibit. Very anxious :):):D

Lame @_@, btw how is the construction on the Tundra Trek coming along? Is it soon to be open, Ungulate?

The Tundra will probably not open until the earlist in June. As for the pandas if the zoo choses to aquire them they would be here within 5 years because the Eurasian section is being renovated next. As soon as the Tundra is completed Eurasia will close. Ungulate, what plans are being made for the elephant exhibit? Any interesting things?

Exhibits I would love to see renovated after the Tundra, Eurasia, Canadian Wilderness and Tropical Americas is done would have to be the Indo-Malayan area. The whole area needs a facelift. The zoo should make it look asian!

The Toronto Zoo just recently opened the newly redone lion-tailed maqacue exhibit. This exhibit is a big step up from wht it used to look like more enrichment and foilage. This exhibit is entirely geothermal. The ground in the exhibit is heated and cooled by the earth. The first outdoor zoo exhibit to be heated by geothermal energy in the world!

I thought that was an exciting project the moment I heard about it. Here's hoping more exhibits will be created with that in mind again, both at Toronto and elsewhere.

Surprisingly, I actually don't mind the grizzly bear and jaguar exhibits. They could be larger but they include lots of stuff for the animals and they can hold up until the zoo opens the new exhibits for them

Also, I find the snow leopard exhibit to be one of the better worst ones. This may sound crazy, but I actually like the use of the vertical space and what the exhibit contains. Its just the space itself bothers me a bit.

It will be good once they get there new exhibit though. Someone mentioned it last week, is there a time line on when this should be starting and opening?
