Toronto Zoo Exhibits!!

I think someone mentioned that the snow leopards are suppose to move to one of the mountain goat enclosures, so basically there will be a new exhibit for them. I think that will be one of the exhibits to first be done after the Tundra Trek is complete.
 
@Zoogoer & Flixox: The "slated" snow leopard exhibit I think will be apart of various exhibits done in the Eurasian Section. (The next phase of the North Zoo Site Redevelopment) It may be apart of the first sub-phase of the Eurasian Section.

@Zoogoer I agree with you about the vertical space, its really good that the cats can get up high! This also applies for the orangutans. When somebody says to me about how the exhibit is ugly, its 100% true, its not naturalistic but they apes can soar high above the ground which is a large plus to the exhibit.
 
It is, when I see the orangutans climbing that high and sliding down on those poles most people are amused and are in awe, especially if it's a baby. It's quite a crowd pleaser, and there is lots of enrichment for the orangutans. I'm curious with one enrichment item though, the dead tree in the exhibit with small mesh holes within; do the orangutans use that item?
 
I think the keepers put enrichment and food in it to keep them occupied
 
The keepers but various "treats" in there and the orangs try and get them out. If you go early enough in the morning you can see them trying to get it out.
 
I never go early and I thought the orangutans don't use that enrichment item. Thanks for the info. :)
 
Since I flip flop on the order, here's my top favorite and top least favorite in no particular order:

Favorite:

The majority of the African Savannah, especially for the Kudu/impala, baboons, lions, cheetah, exception being elephants which I feel is too small, though I'm aware there's far worse elephant exhibits.
Malayan Woods Pavilion
Australasia Pavilion
African Rainforest
Tundra Trek

Least favorite:

Indonesia, both indoors and out (with the exception of the Lion Tailed Macaques), especially the Malayan Tapir, Indian Rhino and Orang-utan. This area just seems to have been forgotten and I hope with the renovation of the orang exhibit, the other species aren't left out.
Older sections of the African pavilion, such as the Pygmy hippo exhibit
Outdoor Gorilla habitat

An unofficial add in, exhibits which I'm on the fence about:

Eurasia has some good enclosures but I'm really looking forward to its renovation.

The jag exhibit has its plusses and minuses but again, but I'm glad they're on the list of getting a new enclosures. Slightly off subject perhaps but I think this exhibit could still make a good exhibit for another smaller carnivore, such as Bush Dogs or ocelots, or maybe even Harpy Eagle with proper adjustments. A small herbivore such as Pudu might do okay here too.
Sumatran Tigers probably have one of the better exhibits in Indonesia, but could still do with improvements.
Snow Leopards; too small for the species but like the jaguar's exhibit, could still be a good exhibit another smaller carnivore. Red Panda if they're going to relocate them in the zoo, or Pallas' Cat?
 
I agree with you about the jag/snow leopard exhibits being used for smaller carnivores. I like the idea of putting in ocelots or bush dogs instead of the jaguar and the Sumatran tigers could also use a face lift in all the yards, the "cave" should be redone too make it look like a realistic one and more plants, that are native to their habitat, a stream with a deep pool and having logs and dead trees for climbing opportunities.
 
Very good planning, there; I think some winter-hardy Asian plants like Hostas could be planted, though I'm not sure if there's any in Sumatra. Just don't think they'd withstand tigers, though :D Although they could probably be planted in front of that electric wire in front of the window, which could effectively hide it. They can grow BIG.
 
Maybe some cold hardy bamboo too!, I'm sure the cats won't destroy that...hopefully :confused:
 
Once the jaguars/snow leopards move out of there enclosures I am hoping they have smaller replacement animals

Possibilities for the Snow Leopard Exhibit

- Red Panda

- Pallas Cat

- Binturong

- Fishing Cat (with slight modification)

- Tufted Deer (with slight modification)

and many others


Possibilities for the Jaguar Exhibit

- Bush Dog

- Capybara (with slight modification)

- Giant Anteater (with slight modification)

- Pudu (with slight modification)

- Harpy Eagle (with major renovation)

- Giant River Otter (with slight modification)

- Howler/Squirrel Monkey (with major renovation)

- Small Walkthrough Aviary (with major renovation)

These are only ideas but a person can dream
 
I think the Red panda exhibit is getting a completely new exhibit in the Eurassia phase and I think for the Mayan Temple you should place the Giant Otters in the waterfall/island area because at the moment the only thing occupying that enclosure are macaws and swans.
 
Does anyone know what the actual plans are if and when the snow leopard and jaguar exhibits have both moved out?
 
I'm sure there have been many ideas thrown around and considered but this would be a question for Ungulate who works at TZ

For all we know, these exhibit could be demolished for new exhibit space when the current inhabitants go to there newly improved exhibits

The river area could work for Giant river otters but it would probably have to be renovated to prevent an escape (The viewing area walls would have to be heightened and the waterfall would have to have some sort of barrier aroudn it so the water could still get through while preventing the otters from climbing up it and out of the exhibit)
 
Lots happening on this thread! I would put giant anteater in the current jag exhibit. i would also but capybara back on exhibit it the waterfall area! It would be a shame if the zoo dimolished that area because it has so much potential. As for the current snow leopard I would be thinking along the line of a small candian animal because that section of Eurasia will probably contain the Canadian animals as a part of the Canadian Wilderness!

@Kifaru there are no plans that the "public" no about for anything other than the Tunrda Trek right now. As for people who work in the zoo, they might know a thing or two!
 
The only area in the Myan Temple area that needs a bit of a face lift. This is one of my favourite areas of the zoo, and, like Quartz said, it's got a lot of potencial.
One question: Were you able to actually go into the temple ruin in the past?
 
I don't think so, but I know you used to and now can again go behind the waterfall!
