Exmoor Zoo Exmoor Zoo 2019

They have three Dusky Pandemelon, the pair and last years offspring :) Not sure if it's been mentioned already but a keeper informed me yesterday that the female has a joey and they're expecting it to pop its head out any day.

I just wish Exmoor wasn't so far from me, this was only the second time i'd been able to visit. It's such an excellent zoo in my opinion!
 
One piece of news from the Zoo's website that I haven't seen mentioned here - a female rock hyrax (named Hilda) has arrived from Longleat Safari Park and is now being kept in the Tropical House. It is the Zoo's intention to get her a partner which Chester Zoo have offered as part of the European captive breeding program.

Am I right in thinking that Longleat's hyrax are of the Arabian subspecies while Chester's are of the Cape subspecies?

Yes that is correct. Bit of a strange combination. Maybe they made a mistake on the website and meant Cotswold's? CWP being the other UK holder of the Arabian subspecies

Had a visit to Exmoor a couple of weeks ago - excellent day out and lovely to see some new (to us) residents in the Ring Tail and Fanaloka. Was chatting to the keepers regarding the Fanaloka and they advised one of the brothers will be going to Chester at some point and they then hope to receive a female to pair with the other brother. However the receiving a female bit was firmly in the 'we hope' stage rather than a certainty.
 
Some Bush dog pups appear to have been born, I have just seen some pictures of the pups on a zoo photography page. There seem to be at least three pups.
 
The zoo announced the litter of three pups on Facebook a few days ago. They have some photos and video. They are running a competition to win a cuddly toy or two adult tickets to visit the zoo to celebrate.
 
I had the opportunity to visit here today. The only occassion I have visited previously was in the 1980's when the site was the 'Exmoor Bird Garden'. It is very different now. I think I managed to see most/all of the specialities; Ringtail, Rusty-Spotted Cat, Sand Cat, Caracal, Fanaloka( both fast asleep) Fishing Cat, Singing Dogs, Maned Wolves, Hunting Dogs, European Wolf, Puma, Black Leopard, mainly South American Primates, Rock Hyrax(now 3), Potoroo,Dusky Pademelon, Tayra etc. Bush dogs not seen, perhaps due to arrival of recent pups.They have a good range of birds too, particularly Amazon Parrot and Ibis sp. among others. Perhaps some of these were inherited from the Bird Garden era? The Sitatunga paddock has a marshy area and pool which was nice for them. Overall I found it a very pleasant place, with decent-sized naturalised exhibits for most species, though the site has quite a closed-in feel with some of the narrow pathways interconnecting the exhibits proving a little confusing. One slight grouse was two or three exhibit labels for species no longer there- a finger board pointing to Cheetahs & Blackbuck (no Blackbuck any more) and a label for Orinoco Geese (died) were two that spring to mind. Rating; very good overall. Will post a few photos soon.
 
Visited today and spotted a pair (well, two, unsure of sex) of African civets in the enclosure which held the golden cat on my last visit. A keeper said they've been there around 10 days. No signs on the enclosure yet.
Managed to get some nice views of the ringtails when we arrived at around 13:30 and the fanaloka when they were fed at around 15:00.
 
After looking at their list of species, Exmoor would be a zoo I'd wanna work at if I was a keeper! It has the greatest collection I've ever seen. (When looking at species that I personally enjoy/would want to work with... the only thing it's missing are more primates!!)

Who's all been to this zoo? What is it like?
 
It is a great zoo to visit. The only real drawback is that many of the enclosures are not very good for photography, and its location in a valley means it is not very good for wheelchair users. The cafeteria is good, but the biggest draw is a really great collection, especially birds and carnivores.
 
I have done a couple of experiences there and the staff are absolutely delightful. They are more than happy to go with your interests and tailor things to suit you. The size of the zoo, despite being on a hill, means that it is easy to wander around and re-visit enclosures as many times as you like. It's one of those zoos that I wish I was closer to, so I could visit more often. If I lived nearby, you'd have a hard time getting me to leave!
